“Zionism is fascism, exactly.” George Habash (Part 1)

George Habash was a Palestinian doctor and the founder of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). Born in Lydda to an Orthodox Christian family during the  British Mandate of Palestine, Habash attended medical school at the  American University of Beirut (AUB) in Lebanon. Habash returned to Lydda in 1948 despite rising violence from Zionists; he and his family were soon displaced from Lydda and eventually moved to Amman in Jordan. Habash joined the 'Urwah al-Wuthqa literary society at AUB, which held discussions on the need for armed revolution, particularly against the Zionists. A year later, Habash met with individuals from Syria and Egypt, with whom he formed Al-Kata'ib, a Pan-Arabist group with the goal of liberating Palestine. Al-Kata'ib developed a paramilitary wing with support of al-Wuthqa, but disintegrated following heightened prosecution, forcing Habash to essentially go underground.
