Divest from Israel

What is divestment?

"Disclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not rest,” protesters at Columbia and universities across the country have chanted.

University students are getting arrested and suspended as pro-Palestine protests are burgeoning across campuses in the United States. Students are expressing solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where more than 34,000 people have been killed in Israel’s war of the enclave since October.

Students are calling on their universities to “disclose and divest” their investments in companies and organisations linked to Israel and its war on Gaza.

What does divestment mean?

Divestment is the process through which an organisation sells off its shares, assets, or other investments for political, ethical, or financial reasons, according to the Cornell Law School website. In the case of a university, to divest would mean to pull out of investments in certain companies made with money from the university’s endowment fund.

The demand for divestment is not new in the movement against Israel’s occupation of Palestine. In fact, divestment is central to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, an international effort calling for the boycott of companies accused of being complicit in the occupation of the Palestinian territory, the war on Gaza and violating international law.

What are the students’ divestment demands?

Protesters at Columbia passed around a leaflet during admitted students' weekends on April 20 and 21, listing the names of some of these corporations.

Lockheed Martin, HEICO, BlackRock, Google and Microsoft – Caroline Anne Bissonnette.

The New York University (NYU) Alumni for Palestine website calls on NYU to “terminate all vendor contracts with companies playing active roles in the military occupation in Palestine and ongoing genocide in Gaza, namely Cisco, Lockheed Martin, Caterpillar and General Electric”.

Students at different US universities are calling for greater transparency about their institutions’ investments.

Why have these companies been named?

The NYU Alumni for Palestine group cited investigations published by the Economic Activism Program of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), a Quaker organisation that promotes lasting peace with justice, which names four specific companies.

An investigation of the US-based technology company Cisco revealed that it had established a long-term partnership with Israel in 2018 to develop government-subsidised co-working hubs to help integrate small towns and remote regions to the Israeli high-tech industry. Some of these hubs have been at least partially established in “occupied Palestine and Syria”. Israel’s occupation of the West Bank (Palestine) and the Golan Heights (Syria) is viewed as illegal under international law by most countries.

Maryland-headquartered Lockheed Martin is the world’s largest military company, and an AFSC investigation found that it supplies the Israeli government with weapons. Additionally, the weapons are sometimes “gifted to Israel through the US government’s Foreign Military Financing program”, the investigation found.

Equipment made by US bulldozer manufacturer Caterpillar has also been gifted to Israel through the US financing programme. The Israeli military routinely uses Caterpillar’s D9 bulldozers to demolish Palestinian properties, the AFSC found.

Solidarity with the protesters!
America's message to the world is clear:

You can't protest
You can't march
You can't chant
You can't express solidarity or wear certain symbols

If we fund Genocide, you must accept it.

This isn't democracy. It's Israeli dictatorship.
A company owned by a prominent Egyptian businessman and ally of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is reportedly earning approximately $2 million per day from Palestinians seeking refuge from the Israeli genocide in Gaza.

Hala Consulting and Tourism Services, belonging to Sinai tribal leader and business magnate Ibrahim al-Organi, is charging Palestinians crossing from Gaza's Rafah into Egypt at least $5,000 per adult and $2,500 for children under 16.

Recent reports indicate that the company generated over $88 million in March alone.

Leaked details of ceasefire proposal hints at compromises to end war in Gaza: Report

The Associated Press (AP) news agency reports that leaked details on truce proposal talks between Israel and Hamas hints at compromises on both sides to end the war on Gaza.

According to the AP, the initial stage of the deal would last for 40 days. During this period, Hamas would start by releasing female civilian captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

After this first release, Israeli forces would withdraw from a coastal road in Gaza and head inland to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid to the starved Palestinian territory.

During this period, displaced Palestinian civilians would be able to return to their homes in the northern Gaza Strip. Hamas would also provide a list of captives who are still alive during that time.

Within a period of three weeks, both sides would start indirect negotiations that aim to restore a permanent calm in Gaza, the AP reports.

Three weeks into this first phase, Israeli troops would withdraw from central Gaza.

The second six-week phase would seek to finalise arrangements for a permanent calm in Gaza, and the release of all remaining captives, both civilians and military, in exchange for more Palestinian prisoners released from Israeli jails.

Israeli occupational military captives held in Gaza would not be released before the start of the calm in the war-torn territory.

The third and final stage, according to AP, would include the release of the remains of deceased captives and more Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, and the start of a five-year reconstruction plan for the territory.
