Over 50 ships from at least 44 countries head to Gaza

The Global Sumud Flotilla is on its way to Gaza with over 50 ships carrying activists from 44 countries have departed Barcelona, loaded with food, medicine, and other aid.

Organizers say the mission seeks to break 'Israel’s' blockade, calling it a deliberate policy that deprives more than two million Palestinians of basic necessities.

Israeli regime has intercepted previous flotillas attempting to reach Gaza, including the Handala, stopped in June about 160 nautical miles off the coast.

The 'Israeli' occupation army also confirmed that its navy conducted maritime drills two days before the flotilla’s launch, practicing what it described as “a variety of combat scenarios.”

Among the participants is Irish actor Liam Cunningham, known for his role as Ser Davos Seaworth in Game of Thrones. Before setting sail, he drew parallels between his fictional character - who smuggled food to a starving garrison - and his real-life advocacy. “I am a human being and I don’t want to see human beings treated the way Palestinians are treated,” he said.

The convoy is carrying essential humanitarian supplies, including medical equipment and baby formula. Activists stressed that the flotilla poses no military threat and is sailing through international waters.

Palestinian journalist Duha Saife mourns the immense loss of her family after an Israeli terror attacks killed her parents, sister, brother, and nephew.

This tragedy comes just five months after Israel killed her three children in an attack on a shelter in Gaza, leaving her severely injured.

Today, Duha bears this pain alone, having managed to leave Gaza for treatment after losing part of her face in the Israeli massacre.
At least 21,000 children in Gaza have been disabled since 7 October 2023, a United Nations committee said on Wednesday.

About 40,500 children have suffered “new war-related injuries” in the nearly two years since the genocide began, with more than half of them left disabled, said the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The Growing Global Support for Palestinian Statehood

The recognition of Palestinian statehood has gained momentum over the years, particularly since Yasser Arafat's declaration of independence on 15 November 1988. This declaration included the territories of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem, leading to immediate recognition from numerous countries, especially in the Middle East and Africa.

As the situation in Gaza escalates, more nations are formalizing their recognition of Palestine, especially with the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in September 2025. Full UN membership is crucial for statehood, requiring a two-thirds majority from the 193-member UNGA, which translates to approximately 128 nations. Currently, Palestine has the backing of 147 members.

The Role of the UN Security Council

For Palestine to achieve full UN membership, it must first secure approval from the UN Security Council (UNSC), which includes five permanent members: the United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China. The U.S. has historically opposed Palestinian statehood, using its veto power to block recognition efforts. Some countries advocate for a two-state solution but argue that Palestine is not yet ready for recognition.

G20 Nations and Their Stance

Among the G20 nations, 10 members have recognized Palestinian statehood. This includes:

- India
- Indonesia
- Saudi Arabia
- Turkey
- Russia
- China
- South Africa (1995)
- Brazil (2010)
- Argentina (2010)
- Mexico (2025)

Recently, France became the first G7 nation to signal its intent to recognize Palestine, followed by the UK, Canada, and Australia. However, five G20 members, including the U.S. and Germany, have yet to offer recognition.

Middle Eastern and North African Support

Arab nations were among the first to recognize Palestine, with Algeria being the first on the day of Arafat's declaration. Other early supporters included Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. Over the years, many more countries in the region have followed suit, with Lebanon and Syria recognizing Palestine in the late 1980s and early 2010s, respectively.

European Recognition

European support for Palestinian statehood has been more gradual. Eastern European countries like Albania, Bulgaria, and Hungary recognized Palestine in 1988. In recent years, Iceland, Sweden, Spain, Ireland, and Norway have also joined the ranks of supporters. However, countries like Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands have expressed reservations, often citing the need for a two-state solution.

African Nations' Response

Many African nations quickly recognized Palestinian statehood following their own independence movements. Countries such as Angola, Botswana, and South Africa have been vocal supporters. However, Cameroon and Eritrea remain notable exceptions, with Cameroon maintaining strong ties with Israel.

Asia-Pacific Perspectives

In the Asia-Pacific region, countries like Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Indonesia recognized Palestine in 1988. However, nations like New Zealand and Singapore have yet to formally recognize Palestine, despite expressing support for a two-state solution.

Conclusion

The global landscape regarding Palestinian statehood is shifting, with increasing recognition from various countries. As the UNGA approaches, the dynamics of international support will continue to evolve, reflecting the complexities of geopolitical relationships and the ongoing conflict in the region. The path to full recognition remains fraught with challenges, particularly from nations with vested interests in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
