On August 28, 1963, the Baptist preacher and civil rights leader stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, looking out on a sea of humanity.

People were there because they had had enough: Enough of racism, enough of poverty, enough of violence. And they needed it to stop.

President Kennedy wasn’t sure about the protest. He said it was “ill-timed”, and could make it more difficult to pass the Civil Rights Act.

But King and the other civil rights leaders disagreed. The march would take place, they said, whether the president liked it or not.

On the day, gospel singer Mahalia Jackson performed, before taking her seat within earshot of the podium.

King began to read from a prepared text but then Jackson, who had previously heard the reverend speak about his “dream”, shouted at King.

King paused, set his written remarks aside and spontaneously launched into what would make his speech one of the great speeches of all time.

King closed his address by saying that once Black people achieve freedom …

A painting entitled *Abu Ghraib Prison* by the American artist “Jens Borg”, illustrates the humanitarian violations to which Iraqi prisoners were subjected.

*The painting was refused to be displayed in many American museums* until it was displayed in 1 of the Manhattan museums which caused massive anger from the American authorities.
*Abu Ghraib prison is a disgrace in human history and in societies that claim humanity*.

On this day in 2006, Julian Assange creates Wikileaks, which would go on to reveal the worst war crimes committed in NATO nation wars in the Middle East, and corruption and malpractice of governments worldwide.

Among the many revelations, was the Collateral Murder footage from Iraq, in which a US Apache helicopter opens fire. Reuters journalists, Saeed Chmagh and Namir Noor-Eldeen were gunned gunned down, several others were killed while the US pilots laughed.

Julian Assange remains imprisoned in the UK, facing extradition to the United States where he faces up to 175 years in prison for revealing Washington’s crimes and secrets that the US did not want the world to know about.

This video of the killing of the good samaritans who stopped to save the severely injured Reuters employee Saeed Chmagh is evidence of the commission of a war crime.

On this day in 2006 Julian #Assange created #wikileaks.

Julian is 52 now. He was 38 when WikiLeaks published Collateral Murder and was last free. The video shows the US army killing a dozen civilians, including two Reuters employees on assignment and the rescuers who stopped to help the wounded. Reuters formally attempted to obtain the video but the Pentagon refused to hand it over. The evidence of what had happened remained on US military servers until intelligence whistleblower Chelsea Manning sent it to WikiLeaks.

Collateral Murder had a massive impact. The millions of dollars that had been poured into Pentagon PR messaging couldn’t make the public unsee the war crime.

Israel-Palestine escalation live news: Hamas starts Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.

It says it has fired was thousands of rockets towards Israel. Several casualties have been reported.

Who are the Jewish groups who enter Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa compound?

Over the past three decades, Israel has enforced greater control over the Al Aqsa Mosque compound, including by controlling who enters and exits, restricting Palestinian access, conducting violent raids inside, and increasingly facilitating the entry of Jewish hardline groups who, since 1967, have publicly stated their aim to take over the compound, destroy the Dome of the Rock, and build a third temple there.

Why is Al-Aqsa so significant?

Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, has said that one of the reasons for its operation against Israel is in response to the continuing provocations in Al-Aqsa.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem is one of the holiest sites in the world. It is also the most contested piece of territory in the Holy Land since Israel occupied East Jerusalem, including the Old City, in 1967, along with the West Bank and Gaza Strip. However, the conflict dates even further back, to before the creation of Israel.

The compound is important to both Muslims and Jews.

For Muslims, the Noble Sanctuary hosts Islam’s third holiest site, the al-Aqsa Mosque, and the Dome of the Rock, a seventh-century structure believed to be where the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven.

“The enemy besieging Gaza has planned to surprise it and escalate the aggression against our people in the Gaza Strip, in addition to the settlement and aggression that continues every moment in the West Bank, which seeks to uproot our people and expel them from their land, and the crimes of the occupation against our people in the 1948s, as it stands behind all the killing and assassination operations there, and the occupation’s continuation of detaining our prisoners for decades, and reneging on agreements when he re-arrested those liberated from the swap deal.

“For all of this, we are waging a battle of honour, resistance and dignity to defend Al-Aqsa, under the title that was announced by Brother Commander-in-Chief Abu Khaled Al-Deif, “Al-Aqsa Flood”. This flood began in Gaza and will extend to the West Bank and abroad, and every place where our people and nation are present.”
