55 Palestine journalists killed by Israeli occupation since 2000
Occupied Palestine (In Palestine Today)- Israeli Forces have killed 55 Palestinian journalists since 2000.
βFifty-five reporters have been killed, either by Israeli fire or bombardment since 2000,β Naser Abu Baker, Head of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS), told a press conference in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
He added that two journalists were killed by Israeli forces in 2022, including Al Jazeerajournalist, Shireen Abu Akleh.
Abu Akleh, 51, a Palestinian-American journalist, was killed on 11 May, and the Palestinian Health Ministry said she was shot in the head while covering an Israeli military raid in the West Bank city of Jenin. The Israeli army, however, said the reporter was likely killed by βwrongβ gunfire from an Israeli soldier.
Several leading media agencies, including Al Jazeera, CNN, Associated Press, Washington Post and the New York Times conducted their own investigations, which all came to the conclusion that Abu Akleh was killed by an Israeli bullet.
Abu Baker said the highest number of Israeli attacks against Palestinian journalists was reported in Jerusalem.
βThese assaults aim to prevent journalists from conveying the truth about what Islamic and Christian holy sites are exposed to,β he added.
Abu Baker said the PJS is taking steps to take the Israeli attacks against journalists to the International Criminal Court, without providing further details.
Mohammad Al-Lahham, Head of the PJSβs Freedoms Committee, said 40 Palestinian journalists were detained by Israeli Forces last year, 20 of whom are still in prison.
There was no comment from the Israeli authorities on the report.
According to Palestinian figures, Israeli forces killed 224 Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza last year.

Turkey earthquake: Death toll could increase.
The death toll from a strong earthquake in south-eastern Turkey, near Syria's border, could rise eight-fold, the World Health Organisation has warned.
The toll, which currently stands at more than 3,400 people, has increased rapidly since the first earthquake struck early on Monday morning.
About 12 hours later, a second powerful tremor hit further north.
Rescuers have been combing through mountains of rubble in freezing and snowy conditions to find survivors.
Countries around the world are sending support to help the rescue efforts, including specialist teams, sniffer dogs and equipment.
The US Geological Survey said the 7.8 magnitude tremor struck at 04:17 local time (01:17 GMT) at a depth of 17.9km (11 miles) near the city of Gaziantep.
