Dr. Mohammad Saadatseresht, Head of School of Surveying and Geospatial Engineering, College of Engineering, University of Tehran, was invited to the panel discussion titled Remote Sensing and the Construction Industry at the 16th 3D GeoInfo conference in New York on 12 Oct 2022.

Please introduce yourself:
I am glad to see you and I am happy to be here on this discussion panel. I hope we will have an influential and informative discussion. This is Mohammad Saadatseresht, the associate professor since 2004 at the school of Surveying and Geospatial Engineering, College of Engineering, The University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran. My research interest is close-range photogrammetry including network design, UAV mapping, mobile mapping, point cloud processing and modeling, 3D reconstruction by different shapes from X methods, SLAM, LiDAR mapping, development of optical scanners, PBR texture, and NeRF.

Question 1:
Over the past 10 years, what are the largest changes you have seen with respect to using remote sensing in the construction industry?
Answer 1:
Digitalization revolution effects on construction industry so that we see huge demands for using 3D data collection and processing technologies such as SLAM, UAV, InSAR, and LiDAR with space, aerial and terrestrial platforms. The indoor mapping and navigation are also very attractive area for current decade.

Question 2:
Remote sensing is faster, cheaper, more accessible, and more accurate than ever, do we risk becoming an industry of lots of data but little knowledge?
Answer 2:
Thank you for your good and deep question. I strongly believe that the technologies provided by developers are beyond their users and we, as geospatial scientists, need to make more attention to education and training for construction engineers in order to make them capable to utilize the RS technologies in their daily works, practically. On the other hand, huge RS data without access to the on-time, user-friendly, and intelligent processing software, are not useful. So, we as data scientists should fill the gap between construction applications and valuable RS data through algorithm development and RS system customization.

Question 3:
What remote sensing advancement either in development or in your mind (either hardware or software) do you think could be the big game-changer for advancing the construction industry?
Answer 3:
In my mind, the future of technology is always attractive. You know, I love science fiction movies very much! I imagine a more intelligent UAV as a robot for data collection and real-time onboard processing by Deep Learning in presence of 5G, cloud computing, augmented reality technologies to help construction users before/during/after any structure building.

Question 4:
What do you think is currently the biggest lost opportunity with respect to present capabilities and critical construction needs?
Answer 4:
I think the UAV mapping and 3D city modeling for outdoor mapping and LiDAR SLAM and BIM for indoor mapping are effective opportunities for construction applications that need more attention. In addition, deformation monitoring of large and complex structures is a very important area including valuable technologies such as ground InSAR and vision metrology systems.

قابل توجه دانشجویان کارشناسی ارشد ورودی ۱۳۹۹ (و یا قبل تر که هنوز موضوع پایان نامه آنها تصویب نشده است)

به منظور تصویب نهایی پروپوزال مراحل زیر باید انجام گیرد:
۱- ارسال نسخه پروپوزال با امضای استاد راهنما به مدیر گروه آموزشی مربوطه (مهلت ۱۵ مهر ۱۴۰۰)
۲- بعد از بررسی و تائید گروه آموزشی، نسخه نهایی پروپوزال که به تائید گروه نیز رسیده است، توسط دانشجو در سامانه گلستان ثبت می گردد (این مرحله بعد از تائید گروه آموزشی صورت می گیرد و در صورت پیشنهاد اصلاحات توسط گروه، اصلاحات پیشنهادی قبل از ثبت در سامانه می بایست در پروپوزال انجام گیرد)
۳- بعد از ثبت پروپوزال در سامانه گلستان، متن پروپوزال مورد بررسی و همانند جویی قرار می گیرد و در نهایت به تصویب معاونت آموزشی دانشکده و معاونت آموزشی دانشکدگان فنی خواهد رسید.
