🇮🇳🇨🇳 India-China Border: What’s Behind the Latest Arunachal Claims?

Reports circulating on social media claim that Chinese PLA troops have entered parts of Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Subansiri district, particularly the Taksing Circle.

The claims originated from the Nah Welfare Society, which wrote to the Deputy Commissioner alleging PLA presence and the establishment of camps at locations including Oying, Asaphila, Paniyar, Portang and Tingding Tang.

However, there is no independent confirmation of a fresh Chinese incursion. Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu has described the reports as social media rumours while saying that authorities are engaging with community leaders and examining the matter. Similar claims made by the same community body earlier were rejected by the Indian Army after area mapping reportedly found no Chinese encroachment into Indian territory.

The broader issue, however, is real: the India-China boundary remains disputed and large portions of the LAC are not mutually demarcated on the ground.

India has also recently highlighted 27 locations along the LAC, including strategically important passes, lakes and sites associated with the 1962 war. The move is being interpreted as an effort to reaffirm India's territorial claims, particularly amid China's continuing territorial assertions.

Where does the dispute come from?

The eastern-sector dispute largely revolves around the McMahon Line, which emerged from the 1913-14 Simla Convention involving British India, Tibet and Republican China.
British India, represented by Sir Henry McMahon and Tibet ultimately reached a bilateral agreement after the Chinese representative declined to sign the final arrangement.

China subsequently rejected the agreement, arguing that Tibet did not possess the sovereign authority to independently conclude such a treaty.

India, meanwhile, considers the agreement legally valid and maintains that the McMahon Line represents the established boundary in the eastern sector.

The dispute became significantly more consequential after the People's Republic of China established control over Tibet in 1950.

India inherited the British era boundary framework after independence and gradually established military posts along the frontier. Tensions eventually culminated in the 1962 Sino-Indian War, after which Chinese forces withdrew from much of the territory captured during the offensive.

Why do “incursion” reports keep appearing?

Unlike India's borders with Pakistan or Bangladesh, the LAC with China is not a mutually demarcated international boundary.

Both sides maintain differing perceptions of where the LAC lies.

Consequently, patrols can enter areas claimed by the other side without necessarily crossing a mutually recognised international border.

Historically, troops from both sides have also left markers or objects during patrols to reinforce their respective territorial claims.
This ambiguity creates an environment where reports of "Chinese incursions" or "Indian encroachments" can emerge even when there has been no confirmed alteration of territorial control.

At the same time, this should not be interpreted as meaning that Chinese attempts to alter the status quo are irrelevant. China's infrastructure expansion, military deployments and repeated territorial assertions remain major security concerns for India.

China continues to claim the entirety of Arunachal Pradesh, roughly 90,000 sq km as South Tibet, a claim categorically rejected by India.

The bigger strategic problem

The immediate social media claims about Taksing should therefore be separated from the much larger and longstanding boundary dispute.

An unverified claim of a new PLA camp is one thing.

The unresolved LAC, competing territorial perceptions, #infrastructure competition and #China's broader territorial claims are another.

For #India, the challenge is to maintain effective deterrence and infrastructure along the frontier while seeking greater clarity and eventually a mutually accepted boundary.

Until the #LAC is clearly demarcated, miscalculations, patrol confrontations and competing claims will remain possible.

This is also why sensational claims such as “China captured X kilometres” should be treated carefully unless supported by credible evidence and clearly defined geographic references.

The #India-#China border dispute is not simply a story of one side crossing a line. In many sectors, the fundamental problem is that the two sides do not agree on where that line actually is.
