— 59 years ago today, the U.S. Navy Belmont-class technical research ship USS Liberty, flying the American flag and sailing under weather conditions that made the flag visible, was deliberately attacked over the span of 75 minutes by two Mirage III fighter jets, two Super Mystére fighter-bombers, and two torpedo boats. The attack was only terminated once the IDF believed the ship was sinking; however, it was saved by its crew. Topedo boats and machine guns also fired upon life boats preparing for launch, a sign the IDF intended to leave no survivors.

No punishment whatsoever was given to any members of the IDF that conducted the attack. President Lyndon B. Johnson and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara covered up the truth about the attack to avoid damaging US-Israel relations.

Even the survivors were disrespected by the US government. They were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation in 1968 by Johnson but weren't formally given the award by 1991. President George H.W. Bush was not in attendance for the medal ceremony, instead just waving at them in passing.
