Ibn Yusuf Madrasa โ Marrakesh, Morocco
I had the pleasure of visiting the iconic Ibn Yusuf Madrasa, built in the 1560s by the Saadian Sultan Abdullah al-Ghalib. Once one of the largest centers of learning in the Maghreb, this madrasa welcomed generations of students seeking knowledge in Maliki fiqh, Qiraโat, Arabic grammar, and more.
Walking through its halls, you canโt help but notice the stunning resemblance to Andalusian architecture โ such as the tile work, colors, and pool.
Interestingly, Sultan Abdullah al-Ghalib was also known for his support of the Alpujarras Rebellion โ a bold Morisco uprising against Spanish Catholic rule.

Iโm sure many of you have heard the news already of the famous Mosque turned Cathedral has been caught on fire.
This should cause pain in our hearts as this place is one of most important places in Islamic history.
Just think of the amount of sultans who have prayed here, the scholars who gave sermons on Friday on its minbar and the students of knowledge who memorized the Qurโan and studied while lying on its columns.

Ibn Khaldun (1332โ1406), referred to as the philosopher of ruins, is generally regarded as the greatest intellectual ever to have appeared in the Arab world. He is a genius who ranks as one of the world's great minds. He authored The Muqaddimah, the most important study of history ever produced in the Islamic world. Yet he is not as well known as he should be, and his ideas are widely misunderstood.
In this groundbreaking intellectual biography, Robert Irwin (b. 1946), a British historian, novelist, and essayist, provides an engaging and authoritative account of Ibn Khaldun's extraordinary life, times, writings, and ideas.
Irwin tells how Ibn Khaldun, who lived in a world decimated by the Black Death, held a long series of posts in the tumultuous Islamic courts of North Africa and Muslim Spain, becoming a major political player as well as a teacher and writer. Closely examining The Muqaddimah, a startlingly original analysis of the laws of history, and drawing on many other contemporary sources, Irwin shows how Ibn Khaldun's life and thought fit into the historical and intellectual context, including medieval Islamic theology, philosophy, politics, literature, economics, law, and tribal life. Because Ibn Khaldun's ideas often seem to anticipate by centuries developments in many fields, he has often been depicted as more of a modern man than a medieval one, and Irwin's account of such misreadings provides new insights about the history of Orientalism.

No doubt, one of the blessings of this world is the act of writing knowledge, just as our Salaf (pious predecessors) used to do.
In traditional schools across the Muslim world today, itโs still common to see students writing on wooden boards (al-luh) with black ink.
Acquiring those traditional tools can be difficult nowadays, so I decided to take a modern twist on the tradition. I bought a whiteboard and some markers for 200 Moroccan dirhams (around $20 USD).
I wrote a few lines from the famous poem of Imam Ibn สฟฤshir Al-Fasi Al-Andalusi in his primer al-Murshid al-Muสฟฤซn on the section of Usul al-Fiqh:

It is said that the origins of Imam Ibn Ashir came from Al-Andalus although he was raised in Fez, Morocco.
We try to keep works of the scholars alive by memorizing their poems and studying their books.
