The Jewish community in Morocco and al-Andalus enjoyed the dhimmi-freedom they received under the Islamic rule to such an extent that they learned Arabic, wrote religious books in Arabic, studied the Maliki fiqh and even incorporated it into their Talmudic law.

Imam al Baji a short bio on his life and political efforts during an age of decline
He is the great Maliki Imam Sulaiman Abu al Walid al Baaji, one of the mujtahid imams inside the Maliki school.
Imam al Baaji was born in Badajoz, Al-Andalus 403 after the Hijra to a religious family who respected knowledge. He grew up seeking knowledge from the top scholars of al Andalus of his time before going to the Eastern part of the Islamic world to continue seeking knowledge. He spent 13 years in the East and made hajj four times. He heard hadith from the top muhaditheen of his time and reached to a high level of knowledge in many sciences including fiqh, usul, kalam, hadith, tafsir, Arabic, etc.
After returning to Al Andalus Imam al Baji found that many were influenced by the ideas of Ibn Hazm al Dhaahiri and that people were becoming convinced of the Dhaahiri school. Imam al Baji, who had a friendship with Ibn Hazm, had a series of conversations with Ibn Hazm in which he successfully responded to all of the polemics Ibn Hazm made against the Maliki school. Ibn Hazm said about him "There has not been from the followers of the Maliki school after Qaadi Abdul Wahab similar to Abu al Waleed al Baaji."
Al Baaji also spent his time upon returning to Al Andalus traveling between all of it's cities teaching knowledge and benefiting the people from what he had learned and he was praised by the scholars of his time for this. He revived Islam in the hearts of many people and inspired many more.
One of the tasks Imam al Baaji undertook was an attempt to unify the Muslims of Al Andalus who were under the threat of being concurred by Alfonso VI of Leon and Castile. Muslim rule in Al Andalus during deteriorated in that time into over 20 different kingdoms knows as "แนญawฤ'if". A reality that displeased many of the time. The rulers of these tawaif would compete with each other in dunya while seeking help from the Christian kingdom of Alfonso who would gladly support these tawaif against each other, putting conditions on his help such as high taxes among other demeaning conditions. His plan was to weaken the Muslims by supporting them in fighting each other, getting rich from that, and conquering them. Had it not been for the Maliki inspired dynasty known as The Murabitoon, Alfonso would have probably conquered all of the Muslim kingdoms.
The call of Imam al Baji was for the kings of these tawaif to unite under one rule to face the threat the Muslims were under. While traveling across the various cities and tawaif of Al Andalus to teach the masses he would spread this vision for unification. He would take positions as a judge in these various areas and try to convince the taifa kings of this idea with little success. It is even said that these kings were so negligent in upkeeping the religion that they would drink alcohol in the presence of Imam al Baji, something previous Muslim rulers would be careful not to do in front of religious scholars.
Imam al Baji continued his efforts for 13 years and scholars from around the world would travel to study from him wherever he was. One of the things he would do in his lessons was when applicable, tie the lessons to the current political situation. From example, when teaching the chapter on fitan (trials/tribulations) from hadith collections he would comment on the current state of affairs and he exposed what these Muslim kings were doing. Imam al Baji became one of the important figures who called for The Murabitoon to aid the Muslims in Al Andalus to defeat Alfonso VI.
Eventually Al Mutamid b. Abbad the last ruler of the Taifa of Seville also the most powerful ruler of the tawaif, called upon the Murabitoon for support against the counsel of his son who did not want to seek their help. Al Mutamid responded saying "My son, By Allah it will never be said about me that I delivered Al Andalus to the abode of kufr, and not that I left it for the Christians, such that I will be cursed on the pulpits of Islam as this has happened to others."
