In’Shaa’Allah soon, a new edition of the al-Muhala from Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi will be published in 20 volumes!

Al-Muhala is considered to be one of the must important books in Islamic jurisprudence. In this edition, it is carefully researched and checked and by Dr. Bashar Awad Maruf who is expert researcher in Islamic books. His field of work has included many other famous books such as from Tabari, Dhahabi, ibn ‘Abd al-Barr and others.

As for the book al-Muhala by Ibn Hazm many scholars of the past and present study this book to get a wide understanding of topics in Islamic jurisprudence without the focus on a particular Madhab.

The famous scholar, ‘Izz ad-Din ‘Abd as-Salam said,

❝I have not seen in all the books of knowledge in Islam, anything comparable to ibn Hazm’s al-Muhalla and al-Mughni by Shaykh Muwaffaq ad-Dīn (Ibn Qudamah). ❞

Imam al-Dhahabī added: ❝Shaykh ‘Izz al-Din spoke the truth! And the third is al-Sunan al-Kubra by al-Bayhaqi and the fourth is at-Tamhid by Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr.

Whoever studies these books, then he is an intelligent mufti and (if he) persists in reviewing them, then he is a true scholar.❞

One of the ways to go back to the Andalusian tradition is learning the way of Maghribi-Andalusian Arabic script. This is one of the ways how Muslim scholars wrote their books that can be traced hundreds of years ago.

Couscous is a famous dish the people of Morocco eat every Friday. You can also find this dish to be popular in Algeria and Tunisia as well. But there is no doubt that Couscous was eaten by the Andalusian people before the fall of Granada.

Lisan Al-Din Ibn Khatib al-Gharnati al-Andalusi (d. 776H) mentioned:

❝Tharid (a type of broth) and what is similar to it, is from the food of the western lands (Morocco, al-Andalus, etc) and is called couscous.

This type of food spread in the open countryside and desert lands within tribes of people and young because there is no need to use an oven to cook it. And eating a little of it makes you full and it easy to be digested.❞

If one were to take a visit to Morocco or any one of the North African countries of the ‘Maghribi’ region, they will find many people wearing a common leather slipper.

It is worn in all occasions such as a walk to the mosque or even at weddings. A yellow color is the most common with men but other colors worn as well.

Muhammad Busalam, a historian of Andalusian/Moroccan history mentioned in his one of his books, the history of this slipper.

He mentions that the origin of the slipper was from the east, such as from Syria, as was part of the old customs of the people.

As the early Muslims started to expand to other countries and the Islamic civilization started to grow from east to west, the slipper made its way to the land al-Andalus.

The Andalusian changed the way of the slipper and even started to call the slipper as ‘Balga’ ever since the 11th century which it is still called today.

Don’t think Andalusian culture is totally gone but rather it still impacts the people of the world, Muslim or non-Muslim, in ways we never thought. Even something simple as a slipper.

🔷𝐇𝐚𝐟𝐬𝐚 𝐁𝐢𝐧𝐭 ‘𝐀𝐛𝐝 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐡 𝐀𝐬-𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐲𝐲𝐚𝐡

She was from the city of Granada and her father was a scholar of hadith and a Qur’an reciter.

Hafsiyyah took mastering the six Quranic recitation styles from her father. She also read to her father many books of narrations from the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and books about etiquette. Likewise, she studied with him the Muwata of Imam Malik.

Hafsiyyah was eloquent and well grounded in the Arabic language. She was one of the most well versed in her time of the Arabic language. Her reading very eloquent, even if the hand writing was hard to read and without Arabic vowels. She would read fluently without stuttering or stumbling.

She passed away in the year 580 Hijri at the age of twenty six years old!
