🔷Gems from al-Muwatta:

In this Hadith that I posted with the translation we can gather many gems and benefits.

Amongst the gems and benefits we find are:

➡️To verify any news that you get with authentic sayings.

➡️The Muslim rulers under a just Islamic governance can be amongst the ‘Ulama.

➡️The fuqaha conveying Knowledge to the rulers.

➡️To research.

➡️To make the effort to seek knowledge.

➡️etc.

Imām Yusuf ibn Abd al-Barr al-Andalusī said:

“Marwān (ibn Al-Hakm, Amīd of al-Medina) was from those intrigued with Knowledge and matters of the Dīn which was from (his actions) in the Dunya.

And Marān was from amongst the ‘Ulama. Likewise his son ‘Abd al-Malik.

And in it (this Hadith), searching of the proof (الحجة) and evidence (الدليل). And to search for Knowledge until it is affirmed.

And acknowledging knowledge with the truth (بالحق) and its equity (إنصاف) when he heard the evidence (الحجة) And so, the people of the Dīn and Knowledge are holders of equity and acknowledgment.”

🔷The Women of al-Andalus gave importance for the Qur’ān.

The Andalusian women occupied themselves with memorizing the Qur’ān.

A large number of them would memorize the Qur’ān until it was said that al-Andalus had 60,000 women who have memorized the Qur’ān.

🔶Also these Andalusian women used to raise a lamp above her house in the night to indicate that she memorized the Qur’ān to distinguish herself from the others.

🔷Tétouan. A modern Andalusian city amongst many.

The city of Tetouan... how many of you know it’s rich Andalusian heritage?

When the Andalusians were forced to leave their homes from exile, the Andalusians continued to bring their heritage along with them to other Muslim lands.

They brought their food, language, architecture, way of dress, etc which can still be seen, heard until this very day!

The Andalusians traveled to Fes, Rabat, Oran, Tunis and most importantly and strategically, the city of Tetouan.

🔷If you want the idea how an Andalusian city was like and how the people were then in this video you will have a good idea. This video taken around 85 years ago in the year, 1354 Hijri. You can see the people of Tetouan still carrying their Islamic way of life that their ancestors did in al-Andalus.

Such as: The full modest covering of the Muslim woman with sometimes with the covering of one eye, hood wearing which many Andalusian scholars and students have done, the thobe, etc!

🔶Can you just think that around 85 years ago this how Muslims in Tetouan and outside of Tetouan used to dress?

May Allah help all the Muslims. Amīn.

🔷History of the Murabitin. The state of scholars!

🔶In this video Shaykh Sa’id al-Kamali talks about some of the history of the state al-Murabitun that existed around 900 years ago! They established rule over parts of North Africa and al-Andalus.

Learning about the beginning of the state Murabitūn is important for the Muslim in our era due to the fact they helped protected the Muslims and strove hard to establish following the Qurān and Sunnah in the lands. Also in establishing the Mālikī Madhab in Fiqh.

🔷One of the many unknown gems of al-Andalus was a woman scholar named Ishrāq as-Sawdā’a Al-Arūdīyyah.

She was a well mannered and knowledgeable scholar from the land of al-Andalus. What was well known about her was that she was a black woman and was a slave.

She was the lady of Abī Mutrif Abd ar-Rahmān ibn Ghalbūn al-Qurtubī al-Kātib. He was from the scholars of Córdoba and Imām Dhahabī said about him, “He was known from amongst the top reciters.”

She took from him in the fields of knowledge in Arabic such as in Nahu (Grammar), and in Ādab. They moved to València, another city in al-Andalus, which is located in modern day eastern Spain.

She surpassed and outdid him in many of what she took from him in knowledge. She did better in understanding than him from what he gave her from his teaching.

A top scholar of al-Andalus, Abu Dāwud ibn Sulaymān ibn Najāh, who was a scholar of the Quran and also a student of Imām ibn Abd al-Barr and Imām Bājī, said about her, “I took from her knowledge of poetry and read to her the book, an-Nawādir by Abī Alī, and al-Kāmil by Abī Abas al-Mubarid. She would mention these two books and speak about it from her memory without her even looking at the texts of the book."

She was nicknamed al-Arūdīyyah because she was a scholar in the knowledge of poetry and it’s poem styles.

After the death of Abd ar-Rahmān in the year 443H, she remained teaching until her death in the year 450H.
