🔷It is the month of Ramadan. The month of learning and reciting the Qur’ān. The Qur’ān is in the Arabic language. How can we understand the book of Allah if we do not understand Arabic? When learning Arabic you open up the doors of knowledge of the Religion.

🔷Imām Abu Ishāq ash-Shātibī al-Ghurnātī al-Andalusī said:

Verily this Blessed Shariah is [in] Arabic.

And this is made clear in Usūl al-Fiqh. The Qur’ān is not in the words of the non-Arab or non-Arabic terms spoken by the Arabs. [it is agreed upon] with the majority from the Usūlīn. The Qur’ān came on accordance with that.

The seeking of the understanding of the Qur’ān it truly comes from this special path (Arabic) because Allah, the most High says:

إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا عَرَبِيًّا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ

Verily, We have sent it down as an Arabic Quran in order that you may understand. [Surah Yusuf: 2]

بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِيٍّ مُّبِينٍ

In the plain Arabic language. [al-Shuara: 195]

وَلَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّمَا يُعَلِّمُهُ بَشَرٌ لِّسَانُ الَّذِي يُلْحِدُونَ إِلَيْهِ أَعْجَمِيٌّ وَهَٰذَا لِسَانٌ عَرَبِيٌّ مُّبِينٌ

And indeed We know that they (polytheists and pagans) say: "It is only a human being who teaches him (Muhammad (ﷺ). The tongue of the man they refer to is foreign, while this (the Quran) is a clear Arabic tongue. [an-Nahl: 103]

وَلَوْ جَعَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا أَعْجَمِيًّا لَّقَالُوا لَوْلَا فُصِّلَتْ آيَاتُهُ أَأَعْجَمِيٌّ وَعَرَبِيٌّ قُلْ هُوَ لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا هُدًى وَشِفَاءٌ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ فِي آذَانِهِمْ وَقْرٌ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِمْ عَمًى أُولَٰئِكَ يُنَادَوْنَ مِن مَّكَانٍ بَعِيدٍ

And if We had sent this as a Quran in a foreign language other than Arabic, they would have said: "Why are not its Verses explained in detail (in our language)? What! (A Book) not in Arabic and (the Messenger) an Arab?" [Fussilat: 44]

It is established that it is Arabic, with the language of the Arabs and it is not non-Arabic. So, it is intended of its comprehension. And from the the way of the language of the Arabs, it was understood. And there is no path to seek its understanding, other than this path (Arabic)

🔷Students of Shaykh Muwlūd as-Sarīrī revising the Matan of Arabic Grammar, Alfiyyah during outage of electricity.

Aliffyah was written by a famous scholar of al-Andalus named Ibn Malik who was from the city of Jayyān, southern Spain.

May Allah increase in knowledge to all the Muslims! Amin.

🔷Young children in the land of Africa memorizing the famous, Matan as-Shatibiyyah.

The Matan is a poem that covers knowledge of the Qirāt of the Qur’ān and is well known and memorized in almost all of the lands of the Muslims from east to west, Spain to Indonesia. Many schools and institutes untill this very day are named after the author of this poem.

◾️The author of the poem was al-Qāsim Abu Muhammad ash-Shātibī. A famous scholar who dedicated his entire life to spread the religion of Islam and the Qur’ān.

He was from a city called Xàtiva/Shātaba, eastern Spain.

The was well known in al-Andalus and in other lands for his piety, sincerity in teaching and also his extremely strong trait of memorization.

Although, he was blind he was still able to teach to have many students who will revise with him and to benefit from him.

Ad-Dhahabī said about him:

“He was sparked with intelligence and very experienced in Qirā’āt, Arabic Grammar, Fiqh and Hadith. He has a clear poem with faith, piety, devotion of worship (of Allah), and reverence.” (Siyār Alām an-Nubalā)

May Allah have mercy on him and all the Muslims. Amīn.

◾️Lines from the poem:

46 - وَمِنْ بَعْدِ ذِكْرِى الْحَرْفَ أُسْمِى رِجَالَهُ مَتَى تَنْقَضِي آتِيكَ بِالْوَاوِ فَيْصَلاَ

‏47 - سِوَى أَحْرُفٍ لاَ رِيبَةٌ فِي اتِّصَالِهَا وَبالَّلفْظِ أَسْتَغْنِي عَنِ الْقَيْدِ إِنْ جَلاَ

48 - وَرُبَّ مَكاَنٍ كَرَّرَ الْحَرْفَ قَبْلَهَا لِمَا عَارِضٍ وَالْأَمْرُ لَيْسَ مُهَوِّلاَ

‏49 - وَمِنْهُنَّ لِلْكُوفِيِّ ثَاءٌ مُثَلَّتٌ وَسِتَّتُهُمْ بِالْخَاءِ لَيْسَ بِأَغْفَلاَ

🔷Gems from al-Muwatta:

In this Hadith that I posted with the translation we can gather many gems and benefits.

Amongst the gems and benefits we find are:

➡️To verify any news that you get with authentic sayings.

➡️The Muslim rulers under a just Islamic governance can be amongst the ‘Ulama.

➡️The fuqaha conveying Knowledge to the rulers.

➡️To research.

➡️To make the effort to seek knowledge.

➡️etc.

Imām Yusuf ibn Abd al-Barr al-Andalusī said:

“Marwān (ibn Al-Hakm, Amīd of al-Medina) was from those intrigued with Knowledge and matters of the Dīn which was from (his actions) in the Dunya.

And Marān was from amongst the ‘Ulama. Likewise his son ‘Abd al-Malik.

And in it (this Hadith), searching of the proof (الحجة) and evidence (الدليل). And to search for Knowledge until it is affirmed.

And acknowledging knowledge with the truth (بالحق) and its equity (إنصاف) when he heard the evidence (الحجة) And so, the people of the Dīn and Knowledge are holders of equity and acknowledgment.”

🔷The Women of al-Andalus gave importance for the Qur’ān.

The Andalusian women occupied themselves with memorizing the Qur’ān.

A large number of them would memorize the Qur’ān until it was said that al-Andalus had 60,000 women who have memorized the Qur’ān.

🔶Also these Andalusian women used to raise a lamp above her house in the night to indicate that she memorized the Qur’ān to distinguish herself from the others.
