🔷Zaynab Bint Ishaq an-Nafzāwiyyah

Zaynab is also known as “the Wife of Kings”, and “Zahrat Aghmat” for her looks and intelligence. But is most famously known for her marriage to Murabitun leader Yusuf ibn Tashfin.

Ibn Khaldun said about her, “She was of the world’s most famous women of beauty and authority.”

Zaynab first married the Amir of Aghmat (Berber city in the south of Morocco, an important city for the Murābitūn) named Luqut al Maghrawi.

He was killed when the Murabitun invaded Aghmat. Zaynab inherited his possessions and became the richest woman in the region.

Zaynab then received many marriage proposals from powerful men from all over Maghreb. But she was looking for someone who had the intention of becoming the leader of the west (Maghrib)! Finally, Zaynab accepted the marriage proposal of the Murabitun leader Abu Bakr ibn Umar and gave him her wealth.

When her husband had to return to the Sahara (due to disagreements among some tribes), he advised her to agree to divorce and marry his cousin Yusuf ibn Tashfin who became his successor.

After her 'iddah (waiting period), she followed the advice and married -again- another powerful man, Yusuf ibn Tashfin.

Because of her looks, wealth, intelligence and marriages with powerful men, Zaynab was confronted with much jealousy. She was accused by the inhabitants of Aghmat of being a Sahara (one who practise sihr). How else would she succeed without jealousy of the people?

Zaynab was undoubtedly not flawless in her political choices (and the impact she had on her men) but falsely accusing her of being a sahara is something that was wrong and what we still see happening today to other successful women within the Maghreb community.

She also helped contributed into the rule of rebuilding Marrakech, the rest of al-Maghreb and al-Andalus under the rulership of al-Murabitun because of her smart tactics and intelligence.

🔷The way the people of Knowledge dressed in al-Andalus.

From the most astonishing things is that the Students and Muhadithīn of Córdoba used to memorize wearing clothing of hoods.

Although they were raised in a foreign environment (al-Andalus), that environment differed with Arabs in their habits. Like how Imām Mālik said: “Turbans and slippers are from the ways the Arabs in the past. These habits are rarely done by non-Arabs.”

🔷One of the reasons Yahyā ibn Yahyā al-Laythi al-Andalusī (student of Imām Mālik) sought seeking knowledge, was because (one day) he was passing Zayd ibn Abd al-Rahmān al-Lakhmī al-Andalusī (a top scholar of Hadith and Fiqh) and he was sitting having a conversation with his companion. And how astonishing Zayd was (on what he did)! Imām Zayd said to him, “My son! If you were dedicated on learning take from your hair and fix you clothes!” The companion of Zayd was in clothing of a servant. So Imam ibn Yahya did that and strove hard in teaching until he surpassed the students of Zayd.

🔶Note: Zayād ibn Abd ar-Rahmān al-Lakhmī al-Qurtubī, is the the first who entered the Muwata to the land of al-Andalus.

Imām ibn Abd al-Barr al-Andalusī:

They should not prevent the youth, if he knows something, from speaking about what he has knowledge of. Perhaps a person may be young in age, but an elder with regards to his knowledge. And Allah blesses whom He wills through wisdom and mercy.
