♦️Back in the days of Europe...

Some youth of Europe used to travel to al Andalus in the time of advancement of the Muslims.

They came from Germany, Britain, France and Italy to gather knowledge from the Ulama of the Muslims.

When one of the youth from Britain returned to his country. He was proud and boasting to his peers that he studied in the lands of the Muslims.

From that he was mixing his speech sometimes with Arabic words/expressions.

One of the churches said about this occurrence:

“These youth who go to the lands of the Muslims and return to their countries begin their speech with Arabic. They do that because the people will know that they learned in the lands of the Muslims.”

The German orientalist Sigrid Hunke said:

“The youth of Europe used to imitate the clothes of the Muslims and boast their pronunciation of the Arabic language.”

Because of that, a priest once stood and gave a speech in the public square in an Italian City and said:

“It is unfortunate (Christians) are imitating the Muslims in every condition, of clothing and customs of the Muslims.”

Ibn Khaldūn once said:

The defeated is deeply attached to imitation of the victor in slogans, clothing, creed, all of his conditions and duties.

♦️When al-Mu’tamid b. ‘Abbād [emir of Seville] was threatened by the forces of Alfonso VI, he asked for help from Yūsuf ibn Tāshfīn, the Amazigh Emir of the Almoravids (al-Murābitūn).

The viziers of al-Mu’tamid objected to this idea because they feared these men from the desert will see the wealth of al-Andalus and snatch their rulership from them.

So al-Mu’tamid said:

“I would rather let my sons be camel-drivers for the Mulathamīn [those who cover their face with a turban] than swineherds of Alfonso.”

♦️Two books that will be a treasure for the student of knowledge on his/her journey of seeking knowledge of the Dīn.

Both of these books were complied from Imām Yūsuf ibn Abd al-Barr al-Andalusī and is full of narrations and Athar from the Prophet (ﷺ), Salaf as-Salih and Ulama that speak on many topics for seeker of knowledge. Such as it’s rewards, benefits in this life and hereafter, manners of a student, and many more.

If one wants to learn many narrations and also increase new Arabic vocabulary. This these will be helpful.

🔷From the Tafsir of ibn Juzayy al-Andalusī:

❝It is He who sends out the scattered winds*, in advance of His coming grace.❞ [al-A'raf: 57]

وَهُوَ الَّذِي يُرْسِلُ الرِّيَاحَ نُشُرًا بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَحْمَتِهِ

❝The word الرياح is read in the plural as these are the winds of rain.

Throughout the Quran, the word الرياح is in the plural whenever it comes in the context of mercy and in the singular when in the context of punishment.

Likewise in the Hadith:

اللهم اجعلها رياحاً ولا تجعلها ريحاً
❞

*based on Warsh ‘An Nāfi’. In Hafs ‘An ‘Āsim it’s بُشْرًا (good news) instead of نُشُرًا (scattered winds).

🔷’Aisha bint Ahmed come from a well known family in the city of Córdoba, al-Andalus.

She was a well mannered poet possessed with purity and eloquence of the Arabic language.

In her days, there was no one in al-Andalus who was equivalent to her in knowledge, understanding, literature, poetry and eloquence of the Arabic language.

She used to speak highly of the rulers of Al-Andalus and address them for her needs.

She was also a good handwriter on writing the Masāhif, she collected many books and had strong dedication to knowledge.

Here is some of her poetry:

أراكَ اللَه فيه ما تريدُ
ولا برحت معاليهِ تزيدُ
فَقد دلّت مخايله على ما
تؤمّله وطالعه السعيدُ
تشوّقتِ الجياد له وهزّ ال
حسام هوى وأشرقتِ البنودُ
فَسوف تراه بدراً في سماءٍ
منَ العليا كواكبه الجنودُ
وكيفَ يخيبُ شبل قد نمتهُ
إِلى العليا ضراغمة أسودُ
فَأنتم آل عامر خير آلٍ
زكا الأبناء منكم والجدودُ
وَليدكم لَدى رأي كشيخ
وَشيخكمُ لدى حربٍ وليدُ

Aisha bint Ahmed al-Qurtubiyyah is also amongst the list of Notable Muslims in the 2002 special edition of Saudi Aramco World.

She died in the year 400 H.

🔷What led to Ibn Hazm al-Andalusī to seek knowledge?

Watch this video from Shaykh ibn Uthaymin were he explains how ibn Hazm went from a man who sought seeking knowledge later in his life to become who he was as a scholar.

إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ ٱلْأَبْتَرُ

For he who makes you angry [to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم)]- he will be cut off. •(Surah Kawthar 108/3).

It was said this Ayah was revealed to be a refutation for Abu Jahl. When he said (out of slander) that the prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is cutoff/childless without any offspring. He meant that he had no child of remembrance.

When Abu Jahl died the Sahaba became at rest and his affairs were cut off from his death. Allah informed that this disbeliever (Abu Jahl) is he who is actually cut off, even if Abu Jahl had offspring. Because he is cut off from the Mercy of Allah and he is not mentioned except with a remembrance of accursedness.

A difference with the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), who he is mentioned lasting until the end of time and elevated on the Minbars, connected with the remembrance of Allah.

And the believers from his era to the day of judgement are his followers and he is like a father to them.

Ibn Hazm al-Andalusī:

No calamity is there in the world equal to separation: if the souls of men should flow out of their bodies by reason of it-
and much more the tears out of their eyes-it were but little to wonder at.

A certain philosopher, on hearing a man remark that seperation was the brother of death, said, “Nay, but death is the brother of seperation.”
