Imam Abu Hayyan is a disciple of Zahiri school when he was in Andalus, due to the fact that Zahiri was the prominent school of fiqh at that time in Andalus.

After he arrived in Egypt, he observed that Zahiri school is not well known there. So, he followed the school of Shafi’i where he studied al-Muharrar, a book written by al-Rafi’i and al-Minhaj composed by Imam al-Nawawi from al-Iraqi.

He learned and memorized some part of al-Minhaj (al-Tilmisani 1997, 2:541-542) before he copied the book by hand. Then he summarized it and named it as al-Wahhaj

(al-`Asqalani n.d., 2:121; Ahmad Khalid Shukri 2007, 38).

Even though he followed the school of Shafi’i, he was influenced by the first doctrine al-Zahiri. Al-Isnawi did mention: Imam Abu Hayyan was keener to the school of ahl al-Zahir and sometimes it was too obvious.

In case of the commentary of the Quran, Imam Abu Hayyan also seemed to be more inclined towards the literal meaning of the Quran, and sometimes he used the opinion of Ibn Hazm whenever there is any dispute in the legal texts. He also summarized the work of Ibn Hazm entitled al-Anwar al-Ajla fi Ikhtisar al-Muhalla, as he mentioned it in the book of al-Bahr al-Muhit (Ahmad Khalid Shukri 2006, 38).

♦️Have you ever wondered how the Andalusian dressed like?

These are pics of how the king, merchant, soldier, and the common Andalusian man and woman dressed.

Turbans were commonly worn along with the Silham (a cape like garmet) and flat-like shoes.

The Silham and flat-like shoes is still worn amongst the people of North Africa.

Women would cover their whole body and either show both eyes or one eye.

And take SPECIAL notice to the swords. Different from the swords used from other places in the lands of the Muslims. The Andalusian sword was flat, straight and not curved.

♦️Ibn Hazm al-Andalusī And The First Girl That He Loved.

•I have seen this happen to many people (effects of separation), and can relate to you a personal experience of the same order; for I am also one who has been afflicted by this calamity, and surprised by this misfortune.

I was deeply in love with, and passionately enamoured of, a certain, slave-girl once in my possession (permissible to have relations with in the Shari’ah), whose name was Nu’m: she was a dream of desire, a paragon of physical and moral beauty, and we were in perfect harmony.

She had known no other man before me, and our love for each other was mutual and perfectly satisfying. Then the fates ravished her from me, and the nights and passing days carried her away; she became one with the dust and stones.

At the time of her death I was not yet twenty, and she younger than I. For seven months thereafter I never once put off my garments; my tears ceased not to flow, though I am a man not given to weeping, nor discovering relief in lamentation.

And by Allah, I have not found consolation for her loss even to this day. If ransoms could have been of avail, I would have ransomed her with everything of which I stand possessed, my inheritance and all my earnings, aye, and with the most precious limb of my body, swiftly and willingly.

Since her death life has never seemed sweet to me; I have never forgotten her memory, nor been intimate with any other woman.

My love for her blotted out all that went before, and made anathema to me all that came after it.

📜Imām Abu Ishāq ash-Shātibī al-Ghurnātī al-Andalusī said:

♦️Verily this Blessed Shariah is [in] Arabic.

And this is made clear in Usūl al-Fiqh. The Qur’ān is not in the words of the non-Arab or non-Arabic terms spoken by the Arabs. [it is agreed upon] with the majority from the Usūlīn. The Qur’ān came on accordance with that.

The seeking of the understanding of the Qur’ān it truly comes from this special path (Arabic) because Allah, the most High says:

إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا عَرَبِيًّا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ

Verily, We have sent it down as an Arabic Quran in order that you may understand. [Surah Yusuf: 2]

بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِيٍّ مُّبِينٍ

In the plain Arabic language. [al-Shuara: 195]

وَلَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ إِنَّمَا يُعَلِّمُهُ بَشَرٌ لِّسَانُ الَّذِي يُلْحِدُونَ إِلَيْهِ أَعْجَمِيٌّ وَهَٰذَا لِسَانٌ عَرَبِيٌّ مُّبِينٌ

And indeed We know that they (polytheists and pagans) say: "It is only a human being who teaches him (Muhammad (ﷺ). The tongue of the man they refer to is foreign, while this (the Quran) is a clear Arabic tongue. [an-Nahl: 103]

وَلَوْ جَعَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا أَعْجَمِيًّا لَّقَالُوا لَوْلَا فُصِّلَتْ آيَاتُهُ أَأَعْجَمِيٌّ وَعَرَبِيٌّ قُلْ هُوَ لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا هُدًى وَشِفَاءٌ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ فِي آذَانِهِمْ وَقْرٌ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِمْ عَمًى أُولَٰئِكَ يُنَادَوْنَ مِن مَّكَانٍ بَعِيدٍ

And if We had sent this as a Quran in a foreign language other than Arabic, they would have said: "Why are not its Verses explained in detail (in our language)? What! (A Book) not in Arabic and (the Messenger) an Arab?" [Fussilat: 44]

It is established that it is Arabic, with the language of the Arabs and it is not non-Arabic. So, it is intended of its comprehension. And from the the way of the language of the Arabs, it was understood. And there is no path to seek its understanding, other than this path (Arabic).

♦️The house of Imām ibn Hazm al-Qurtubī al-Andalusī!

Have you ever wanted to know how the Andalusian house looked like, belonging to the well known scholar known from the east to the west, Imām ibn Hazm?

It is important to know, Imam ibn Hazm came from a wealthy family close to the authority rulership of al-Andalus and his place shows how the wealthy Andalusians lived in al-Andalus.

Part of his place used to be a Masjid, where he would conduct classes in and many students would attend.

The house still remains in Spain and sadly is used as a Hotel. SubhanAllah.

♦️From the pride of the Malikīyah, the top scholar of Andalusia, Imām ash-Shātibī al-Andalusī said in regards to the people who follow their desires:

اتخذوا الرجال ذريعة لأهوائهم

"They take men as an excuse for following their desires."

بحثوا عن أقوال العلماء في المسألة المسؤول عنها حتى يجدوا القول الموافق للسائل فأفتوا به ، زاعمين أن الحجة في ذلك لهم قول من قال : اختلاف العلماء رحمة

"They look for statements of scholars on a particular issue they asked about until they find the answer that pleases the questioner. So they take that fatwa contending that the evidence for that (i.e. their act of seeking that opinion they like) is the statement: 'The difference of opinion amongst scholars is a mercy'.
