Sunan ar-rawātib: The voluntary prayers prayed either before or after the 5 prayers. Some narrations state that they are 10 units and others 12.

1️⃣ 2 before Fajr (better than the dunyā and that which is in it - Muslim, 725).

2️⃣ 2 before Dhur (Agreed upon - Ibn ‘Umar) or 4 before Dhur (At-Tirmidhī, Umm Habībah).

3️⃣ 2 After Dhur

4️⃣ 2 After Maghrib

5️⃣ 2 After ‘Ishā

Virtues: ▶️ Whoever prays 12 Allāh will build a house for him in Jannah. (At-Tirmidhī, Umm Habībah).

▶️ They make up for any deficiencies in one’s obligatory prayers (At-Tirmidhī, Abū Hurairah).

How did the Salaf categorise their reading of the Qurān?

They would categorise their reading of the Qurān in 7 portions, reading a portion each day thus completing the Qurān every week.

They would do this acting upon the advice of the prophet ﷺ to ‘Abdullāh bin ‘Amr رضي الله عنهما

‌‏"‏ فَاقْرَأْهُ فِي سَبْعٍ وَلاَ تَزِدْ عَلَى ذَلِكَ ‏"‌‏.‏

"Then finish the recitation of the Qur'an in seven days, and do not finish it in less than this period."

It has been narrated by Aws bin Hudhayfah that he said: “I asked the companions of the messenger ﷺ how did they categorise their reading of the Qurān? They said: 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and the mufassal”. Abū Dāwūd, 1393, declared weak by Al-Albānī رحمه الله

The above narration is the manner which is commonly known to be the way in which the salaf would split their reading of the Qurān over the course of 7 days.

It’s explained in the following way:

3 - Day 1: Al-Fātihah and the 3 sūrahs after it (Al-Baqrah - An-Nisā).

5 - Day 2: The next 5 sūrahs (Al-Mā’idah - At-Tawbah)

7 - Day 3: Yūnus - An-Nahl

9 - Day 4: Banī Isrā’īl - Al-Furqān

11 - Day 5: Ash-Shu’arā - Sād

13: Day 6: As-Sāffāt - Al-Hujurāt

Al-Mufassal: Day 7: Qāf - An-Nās

The mufassal is categorised into 3:

⏹️ The longer portion of it: Qāf - Al-Mursalāt.

⏹️ The middle portion: An-Naba - Al-Layl

⏹️ The short portion: Ad-Duhā - An-Nās.

The section of the Qurān is called the mufassal because there are a lot of fawāsil (partitions) between this portion in comparison to the longer chapters.

A good way to remember this categorisation is:
