Imam Ibn Bāz rahimahu’Allah was asked:

“Which is better: saying tahlīl (Lā ilāha illā Allāh), tasbīḥ (Subḥān Allāh), or seeking forgiveness (istighfār)?”

He replied: Tahleel is better, due to his (ﷺ) statement: “Faith has over seventy branches, and the highest of them is the statement: ‘Lā ilāha illa Allāh.’”

‎On the authority of Al-Mustawrid ibn Shaddad (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:

‎The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

‎“By Allah, the worldly life compared to the Hereafter is nothing except like when one of you puts this finger of his” — and Yahyā gestured with the index finger — “into the sea; then let him see what it brings back (with it).” [Sahih Muslim]

‎Imām al-Nawawī rahimahu’Allah said in his explanation of this hadith:

‎“The meaning of the hadith is that this worldly life, in comparison to the Hereafter, is extremely small and insignificant, having no real worth. Just as the water that clings to a finger when it is dipped into the sea bears no proportion to the sea itself, likewise this world bears no proportion to the bliss of the Hereafter.”

Al-Hāfidh Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali, rahimahullāh, said:

“The month of Ramadan is a month in which Allah is generous to His servants with mercy, forgiveness, and being freed from the Fire.

So whoever is generous to the servants of Allah, Allah will be generous to him with giving, bounty, and recompense of the same kind as the deed.

And combining fasting and charity is among the causes that necessitate Paradise.”

Dawud ibn Rashid raḥimahu’Allāh said, “It used to be said, ‘The title of the Muslim’s page is his good character.’”

[Al-Mujālasah by al-Dīnawarī (4/528)]

Imām Ibn al-Uthaymeen (rahimahullāh) said:

“The transmitted supplications are more beneficial and more comprehensive than the newly-introduced supplications; and even though a person has the right to supplicate with whatever he wishes, so long as it is not a sin, but preserving the transmitted supplications is better.”

“And those who join that which Allah has commanded to be joined (i.e. they are good to their relatives and do not sever the bond of kinship), fear their Lord, and dread the terrible reckoning.” [13:21]

Al-Qurtubi رحمه الله said in his Tafsir:

“It is apparent that it refers to maintaining the ties of kinship, and this is the view of Qatadah ibn Di‘amah and the majority of the commentators; yet despite that, it includes all acts of obedience.”

‎On the authority of Abdullāh ibn Abbās (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: The Prophet ﷺ said:

‎“There are two blessings in which many people are deceived (or at a loss): health and free time.”

‎[Sahih al-Bukhari]

‎Imam Ibn Qudāmah al Maqdisi rahimahullāh said:

‎“So do not waste the precious jewels of your life without action, and do not let them pass without compensation.

‎Strive that not a single breath of your breaths be empty except (i.e., unless it is filled) with an act of obedience, or with a deed of closeness by which you draw nearer (to Allah).

‎For if you had a jewel from the jewels of this world and it were lost from you, you would grieve over it with intense grief. Rather, if even a single dinar were lost from you, it would distress you.

‎So how can you be negligent with your hours and your times? And how can you not grieve over your life passing away without any return?”

‎[Al-Wasiyyah al-Mubarakah, p. 12]

Imam al-Shafi‘i rahimahu’Allah said:

“The jewels (noble qualities) of a person are in three:

1.Concealing poverty, until people think from your self-restraint that you are rich.

2.And concealing anger, until people think that you are pleased.

3.And concealing hardship, until people think that you are living pleasantly.”

Sh. al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah raḥimahullāh said:

“So it has become clear that the foundation of happiness and the foundation of salvation from punishment is:

• The oneness of Allah

• And belief in His messengers

• And the Last Day

• And righteous deeds.”

[Majmooʿ al-Fataawa 34/9]
