لا يحزنك قول الناس فيك
فإن كان كاذبا كانت حسنة لم تعملها
وإن كان صادقا
كانت سيئة عجلت عقوبتها

“Do not be saddened by what people say about you.

If it is a lie, then it is a good deed you did not do (but are rewarded for).
And if it is true,

then it is a sin for which its punishment was hastened.”

Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullāh said: “When there is weakness among the Muslims, and their enemy has the upper hand over them, it is due to their sins and transgressions—
whether from their neglect in fulfilling obligatory duties, both inwardly and outwardly, or from their overstepping of the prescribed limits, both in private and in public.”

A man asked Imām Mālik rahimahu’Allah about someone who said to another: “O donkey.”

He said: “He is lashed.”

[The man] said: “And if he says to him: ‘O horse’?”

He said: “You are lashed! And have you ever heard anyone say to another: ‘O horse’?!”

“Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and do not place in our hearts any resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.” [59:10]

Imam ash-Shawkānī rahimahullāh said: “Whoever does not seek forgiveness for the Companions in general, and does not ask Allah’s pleasure for them, has indeed opposed what Allah has commanded him with in this verse. And if he finds in his heart resentment toward them, then he has been afflicted by a whisper from Shayṭān.”

[Fatḥ al-Qadīr 5/202]
Sheikh Ibn al-'Uthaymeen, rahimahullāh, was asked,

“Is a human being free to choose (mukhayyir) or compelled (musayyar)?”

He replied:

“When you sent us this question, did anyone force you, or did you do it by your own choice? If it was by your own choice, then likewise all your actions are by choice. However, I say this: When a person chooses something and does it, we then know that Allah, the Exalted, had willed it.”
