There are some strings and flags which hints towards this. Apple rolling out RCS seems to be playing a role here. Groups might be only upgraded to RCS only when everyone in the group has RCS.

Google Messages has finally implemented MLS encryption protocol which it announced the previous year.
Now google has to again pressure Apple (RCS encryption 🤔) and other companies to adopt this protocol in order to make cross-platform app messaging a reality with encryption support.
