Example: vigilance
Often we think of vigilance in almost military terms, as if we were standing watch against incoming hostilities. In addition to caution and watchfulness, vigilance means sustained concentration or attention, as when people hold a vigil. Prayer and meditation are both practices of sustaining attention. When we understand vigilance as a peacef ul principle, rather than a warlike one, we can practice it in a spirit of unity, goodwill, and faith.

مثال: حفظِ بیداری
ما اغلب نگهبانی را بیشتر اصطلاحی نظامی می پنداریم. انگار در مقابلِ دشمنی که ممکن است بیاید آماده ایستاده بودیم. علاوه بر احتیاط و نظارتِ کامل، حفظِ بیداری یعنی تداومِ تمرکز یا توجه همانگونه که دیگران بدونِ خوابیدن هشیار میمانند. دعا و مراقبه هر دو تمرین کردنِ حفظِ توجه هستند. وقتی حفظِ بیداری را به جای نوعِ جنگیِ آن اصلی روحانی درک کنیم میتوانیم آن را به منظورِ اتحاد، نیک خواهی و ایمان به کار ببریم.
