📝Identity, Ethnicity and Race

Ethnicity: ይህ ቃል "ዘር"/"ጎሳ" ታዋቂ እየሆነ የመጣው ከ2ኛው የአለም ጦርነት በኃላ ነው። ከዚያ በፊት ግን "tribe" የሚለውን ቃል ነበር ሚጠቀሙት ከዚያ "race" የሚል ቃል መጣ። ይህ ቃል ግን ከ"Nazi ideology"🙈 ጋር ተቀራራቢነት አለው ተብሎ ስለታሰበ "Ethnic" የሚለው ቃል ተወሰደ።

📝According to John Hutchinson and Anthony Smith the term "ethnicity" is appearing in the Oxford English Dictionary in 1953.

ይሄ "Ethnicity" የሚለው ቃል "Ethnic" ከሚለው ጋር ተያያዥነት ያለው ቃል ነው። Ethnic የሚለው ደግሞ Ethnos ከሚለው የGreek Word የመጣ ነው። Ethnos የሚለው ደግሞ Ethnikos ከሚል የLatin Word የመጣ ነው🙈 ቋንቋዎቹ መኮራረጅ አበዙ አ😂

📌"Ethnikos" means a group of people bound together by the same manners, customs or other distinctive features.

📌"Ethnos" refers to a collectivity of humans lived and acted together- Which is typically translated today as 'Nation'.
ነገር ግን Greekኦች ይህን ቃል ይጠቀሙ የነበሩት በእነሱ መካከል የሚኖሩ Non-Greek የሆኑ ሰዎችን ለመግለፅ ነበር።

"North American" ይህን ቃል ይጠቀሙ የነበሩት በሀገራቸው ይኖሩ ለነበሩ "Minority groups (Jews, Italians, Africans...)"

ስለዚህ "Ethnicity" ምንድነው? ምንስ አይደለም

❕None of the founding fathers of anthropology and sociology - with the partial exception of Max Weber granted ethnicity much attention.
ይህ Max Weber የተባለው Sociologist ለEnthnicity እንዲህ ሲል Definition ሰጠው፦

"Ethnic group is based on the belief in common descent shared by its descent, extending beyond kinship, Political solidarity with other groups and common customs, language, religion, values, morality, and etiquette[ስነ ምግባር]."
አያቹ አ Ethnic group/ጎሳ/ ዘር የሚባለው ነገር "ሰዎች ከስጋ ዝምድናቸውም አልፎ ከተመሳሳይ ዘር ማንዘር (ancestry) እንደመጡ ሲያስቡ፣ የሚያደርጉት ፖለቲካዊዊ ህብረት ሲገናኝ፣ ተመሳሳይ እሴት፣ቋንቋ... ሲኖራቸው አንድ "ዘር" እንደሆኑ አድርገው ነው #የሚያምኑት።

In other words, ethnic groups are those human groups that entertain a subjective belief in their common descent because of similarities or physical type or of customs or both, or because of memories of colonization and migration.
ወይም ደግሞ ተመሳሳይ የቆዳ ቀለም (Physical) ወይም ተመሳሳይ እሴት/ባህል ሲኖራቸው ወይም የሚመሳሰል ታሪክ/ትውስታ (like Colonize ተደርገው ወይም ተሰደው ከሆነ) ሲኖራቸው አንድ ዘር እንደሆኑ ያስባሉ።

📝The next great contributer to our understanding of ethnicity is anthropologist, named Frederik Barth.

Barth began with what actors believe or think: ascriptions and self-ascriptions.
ልክ በFilm አለም የሆነ ሰው አንድን ገፀ ባህሪ ያንን ሰው መስሎ እንዲጫወት ሲሰጠው ማለት ነው።
📝A categorical ascription is an ethnic ascription when it classifies a person in terms of his basic, most general identity, presumptively determined by his origin and background.
ስለዚህ "Categorical Ascription" የሚባለውም አንድን ሰው ከማንነቱ፣ ከBackgroundኡ፣ ከአመጣጡ ተነስተን በጎሳ ስንከፍለው (Classify ስናደርገው ማለት ነው።)

📌Barth focused not upon the cultural characteristics of ethnic groups but upon relationships of cultural differentiation, and specifically upon contact between collectivities thus differentiated, 'us' and 'them'.
Barth ትኩረት ያደረገው የጎሳዎች ባህላዊ ገፅታ ላይ ሳይሆን እነዚህ ጎሳዎች በባህላቸው መካከል ያለው ልዩነት ቁርኝት (ቁረኝት😂) ምን እንደሚመስል ነው።

📍The cultural contents of ethnic dichotomies would seem analytically to be of two orders:
የአንድን ጎሳ የባህል ይዘት በሁለት መንገድ ነው የምንመለከተው፦

📝 Overt signals or Signs
The diacritical features that people look for and exhibit to show identity, often such features as dress, language, house-form, or general style of life.
ይህኛው የሰዎችን ማንነት የሚገልፁ አለባበስ፣ ቋንቋን... የሚያመለክት ነው።

📝Basic value orientations
The standards of morality and excellence by which performance is judged.
ይህ ደግሞ የሰውን አስተሳሰብ፣ ሞራል (ስነ ምግባር) የሚገልፅ ነው።

እቺን ያዟት🍼In its most general notion, for Barth, ethnicity is seen as a "Social Organization of Cultural Difference".

Ethnic Groups and Ethnic Identity በቀጣይ ለማየት እንሞክራለን።🙌 አሁን ግን ትኩረት የምናደርገው ባለፈው እንዳልነው Worksheetኦች ምናምን ሼር ማድረግ ላይ ነው።

📌ከBarth በፊት Cultural Difference inside out ነበር የሚብራራው፣ ማለትም አንድ ማህበረሰብ የየሆነን ባህል ገፅታ Possess ካደረገ በኃላ ነው በህብረተሰቡ መኃል ልዩ የሆነ ባህል የሚኖረው።

📌ነገር ግን Barth, ይህንን ወደ Outside in ቀየረው፥ ማለትም ከህብረተሰቡ ጋር ያለን Social Interaction ነው ባህል እንዲኖረን የሚያደርገው።
