The following is a chain of events that transpired in the period from August 24, 2024 till present. Everything stated below is a recollection of those events.
On Saturday, August 24, Telegram and the founder was arrested in France upon arriving on his private jet at Le Bourget Airport near Paris. The event of this magnitude has sent ripples all over nearly all area of the Digital and, certainly, the TON community (which we are proudly a part of) could not stand idly and watch from the sidelines.
In a tidal wave of public statements more and more influencers and active figures in TG, TON and Digital Community came forth in strong condemnation of Pavel’s arrest. GTM wasn’t the exception and after the initial smoke has cleared, we’ve issued a statement, where we committed to join the movement, aptly named #FREEDUROV․
We joined the vanguard that created a petition to free Durov, and we reposted the message, added signing the petition to one of the daily tasks and were diligently spreading awareness of the cause.
And we also have been encouraging our audience to engage in “meme wars”, a form of resistance through memes, a peaceful protest where people express their concerns through posting memes in the accounts of prominent figures.
That day we went to bed with a sense of “it’s not much but it’s an honest job!”. What happened next was surprising to say the least.
Below, the events are listed in the chronological order according to our best recollection.
🙏 Wednesday, August 28. The clicker got hit with a DDoS attack. The game was down and it was down hard. Even though at the time there was a massive update in the works, and some technical issues were inevitable, it didn’t look like just any regular event; something was very fishy.
🙏 Thursday, August 29. GTM Telegram Channel stopped appearing in search results. According to the statistics the last person to join the channel through a search did so on August, 28. It started to look like the channel was shadow banned.
🙏 Saturday, August 31 – Sunday, September 2. Our bot gets hacked, and the users get the following message
The appropriate warning is issued almost instantly. This again felt kind of weird to say the least, because just around a couple of days ago the server had been moved elsewhere, and the security there was top-notch with an extra emphasis on DDoS protection. So naturally we blamed one of our marketing partners, like maybe they turned and decided to pull a lil scam, because what else would it be, a coordinated attack by the French Government?!

So as of last day of Summer 2024 we had our game DDoSed to death, the channel was shadowbanned and it all happened right after our call to action to express their opinion through memes. It’s not like we have such a tech savvy competition that can crack a 44 character API.
After googling scammers' IP address, the breadcrumbs lead us here, the Internet says that it is a block reviewer of the exchange (http://w8.io), something like this, and if you believe this, than it's true, we do not claim anything, but there are too many coincidences, our API is not fully googled on this site, but contains a lot of matching characters in a row about 10, which greatly simplifies the method of matching api, and this seems to be the very thing through which they were able to match the API key.
And the traces were carefully, very carefully swept under the rug. We were able to establish that the API was cracked only because they got cocky and posted their scammy ad right in our bot.
This is the fourth attack and it became successful, because by knowing our API key they managed to find out the IP address of our server and its location. even despite our two-factor authentication protection, the scammers managed to get access to it, we were able to regain access in a matter of minutes, thanks to this the scammers were not able to get into the database. This vulnerability is now a major issue for many bots, so please spread the word and warn projects that might be at risk.
At the moment we have moved our game to new servers again. Access to the game is restored, your data is protected. We kindly apologize for all the game errors and the fact that it is often inaccessible, but by the looks of it we're sorta kiiiiiiiinda waging an information war with a whole ass country lmao

In general, the vulnerability lies in the fact that often the creators of mini-applications do not use bruteforce protection methods and leave their real IP address for connection. And the result is that anyone can pick the password from SSH (remote access to the server) or MySQL (database), for this the attacker needs a botnet and a special program that will manage this botnet and search for possible passwords. There are two main ways to protect yourself. The first one is not really very good, just install bruteforce protection on the server for each protocol (SSH, MySQL, RDP, etc.). The second one is better - to hide the real IP of the server. That is, either use tunnels like Cloudflare or run the web application on a separate address. In fact, any possible vulnerabilities that can be on websites apply to web applications in the cart, it is in fact a website.

Last month I got interviewed by police for 4 days after arriving in Paris. I was told I may be personally responsible for other people’s illegal use of Telegram, because the French authorities didn’t receive responses from Telegram.
This was surprising for several reasons:
1. Telegram has an official representative in the EU that accepts and replies to EU requests. Its email address has been publicly available for anyone in the EU who googles “Telegram EU address for law enforcement”.
2. The French authorities had numerous ways to reach me to request assistance. As a French citizen, I was a frequent guest at the French consulate in Dubai. A while ago, when asked, I personally helped them establish a hotline with Telegram to deal with the threat of terrorism in France.
3. If a country is unhappy with an internet service, the established practice is to start a legal action against the service itself. Using laws from the pre-smartphone era to charge a CEO with crimes committed by third parties on the platform he manages is a misguided approach. Building technology is hard enough as it is. No innovator will ever build new tools if they know they can be personally held responsible for potential abuse of those tools.
Establishing the right balance between privacy and security is not easy. You have to reconcile privacy laws with law enforcement requirements, and local laws with EU laws. You have to take into account technological limitations. As a platform, you want your processes to be consistent globally, while also ensuring they are not abused in countries with weak rule of law. We’ve been committed to engaging with regulators to find the right balance. Yes, we stand by our principles: our experience is shaped by our mission to protect our users in authoritarian regimes. But we’ve always been open to dialogue.
Sometimes we can’t agree with a country’s regulator on the right balance between privacy and security. In those cases, we are ready to leave that country. We've done it many times. When Russia demanded we hand over “encryption keys” to enable surveillance, we refused — and Telegram got banned in Russia. When Iran demanded we block channels of peaceful protesters, we refused — and Telegram got banned in Iran. We are prepared to leave markets that aren’t compatible with our principles, because we are not doing this for money. We are driven by the intention to bring good and defend the basic rights of people, particularly in places where these rights are violated.
All of that does not mean Telegram is perfect. Even the fact that authorities could be confused by where to send requests is something that we should improve. But the claims in some media that Telegram is some sort of anarchic paradise are absolutely untrue. We take down millions of harmful posts and channels every day. We publish daily transparency reports (like this or this ). We have direct hotlines with NGOs to process urgent moderation requests faster.
However, we hear voices saying that it’s not enough. Telegram’s abrupt increase in user count to 950M caused growing pains that made it easier for criminals to abuse our platform. That’s why I made it my personal goal to ensure we significantly improve things in this regard. We’ve already started that process internally, and I will share more details on our progress with you very soon.
I hope that the events of August will result in making Telegram — and the social networking industry as a whole — safer and stronger. Thanks again for your love and memes 🙏
