Western Norway’s 20-km FlΓ₯m Railway is world-renowned for its scenery, often cited as one of the most beautiful rail journeys on Earth.

Built in 1924, the line features 20 tunnels, 18 of which were dug by hand. These winding passages were designed to navigate the steep terrain and shield the tracks from avalanches.

With an 863-meter climb, it is Northern Europe’s steepest standard-gauge railway. Notably, the line crosses the river three times via tunnels hidden directly beneath the tracks.

Since 1940, seven-car trains have served 10 stations at 40 km/h. Service runs ten times daily in summer and four times daily in winter.

P.S. Pure human grit etched into the mountainside.

British railway fans once fought a fierce battle over a bronze duck.

London wanted a monument for Sir Nigel Gresley, creator of the world-record Mallard locomotive. To highlight Gresley’s love for birds, sculptor Hazel Reeves added a small duck to the statue.

The design sparked a massive row. Gresley’s grandsons demanded the duck be removed to protect his dignity, while fans argued it showed his human side. Despite a 3,000-signature petition to keep the bird, the grandsons won.

Ironically, one of those grandsons was a duck breeder himself. On unveiling day, protesters brought rubber ducks to King's Cross, where Gresley’s statue now stands missing his companion.

P.S. Great legacy but no duck.

The CEO of NPS GC Alexey Krapivin leads the Russian Curling Federation as its newly elected President.

As an Olympic sport, curling has a surprisingly deep history in the country, with the Federation now celebrating its 35th anniversary. While it may seem unconventional for the Russian sports scene, curling first arrived in the late 19th century through foreign diplomats and merchants. After a long hiatus, it was officially reborn in the early 1990s. Today, it is a key part of the federal project "Sport as a Way of Life."

The Federation continues to expand its reach across the regions, building professional arenas and launching corporate leagues. What started as a niche curiosity has transformed into a strategic national interest, strengthening its position on the Russian sports map.

Trains cross deserts and borders, overcoming technical hurdles like track gauges or power systems. However, one barrier remains unbeatable: the language of sound.
What does a train sound like? Even in Russia, people can’t agree. A poll showed that 26% hear "tydysh-tydysh," while only 7% stick to the classic "chuchukh-chuchukh."

It gets even more diverse around the world:

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡· In Greece, the wagons make a soft "touf-touf-touf."

πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅πŸ‡¨πŸ‡³πŸ‡°πŸ‡· Asian trains sound much brighter: "gatan-goton" in Japan, "kuang-dang kuang-dang" in China, and a rhythmic "chik-chik-pok-pok" in Korea.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈIn English, trains go "chugga-chugga choo-choo" or make a steady "clickety-clack."

πŸ‡«πŸ‡· French trains have a melodic "tagadam-tagadam" or "tougoudoum-tougoudoum", likely singing along to Edith Piaf.

Despite these different "languages," a long journey has a way of bringing people together, even if they have to speak with their hands.

P.S. Even the rails have an accent.

Rising from an artificial peninsula on Istanbul’s Asian shore, Haydarpasa Station is a castle-like railway terminal designed by German architects Otto Ritter and Helmut Cuno. Named after an Ottoman grand vizier, it opened in the early 20th century as the city’s main railway terminal, pulling in trains from across Turkey, including the Orient Express. Right on the Bosphorus, it doubled as a cargo transfer point with no detours.

The station survived fires and a 1979 tanker explosion, then closed in 2012 for the Istanbul–Ankara high-speed line and the Marmaray tunnel. Locals feared a sale. The Haydarpasa Solidarity Group fought back, and it worked: the building is set to be restored and brought back into the network.

Today, Haydarpasa remains a quiet landmark on the waterfront, waiting for the trains to return.

P.S. Outlasted wars and fires but not paperwork.

Dmitry Bolotsky, Deputy CEO for Commercial Affairs at NPS Group, spoke at a Kommersant Publishing House business breakfast at SPIEF 2026.

He told how the relationship between clients and contractors is changing in today’s β€œeconomy of constraints.”

According to him, one effective way to deliver infrastructure projects is the β€œOpen Book” model, which cuts key risks through transparency, flexibility, and phased planning, but requires clear accountability from all parties.

NPS GC works with both private and public clients. We build infrastructure all across Russia and abroad. Introducing a standard for long-term, balanced contracts β€” five years ahead, for example β€” could improve client-contractor relations, reduce risks, and make projects more efficient. It would bring more predictability and let companies invest in equipment and technology with greater confidence

- Dmitry Bolotsky said.

P.S. Open books, closed risks.

NPS GC presented a model of its Electric Screw Drive for high-speed rail (made by Elteza, NPS subsidiary) at the inaugural SCO exhibition β€œAla-Too Trade & Industry Expo 2026” in Bishkek, hosted at the stand of Russia’s Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The electric drive is designed for 1/25 type high-speed rail turnouts, as the switches stretch for 118 metres which allow trains to branch onto a side track at speeds of up to 120 km/h while maintaining a smooth ride. It operates in conjunction with a hardware-software complex that enables both remote and fully automatic switching, with real-time monitoring of device status. The equipment meets Safety Integrity Level 4, the highest available, which effectively eliminates the risk of operational failure.

On the opening day, the technology was reviewed by Kyrgyz Prime Minister Adylbek KasymΠ°lyev, Minister of Economy Bakyt Sydykov, and Russian Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Ivan Kulikov.

P.S. The ESD is on the map.

Two NPS projects were presented at the St. Petersburg pavilion at SPIEF 2026.

The centerpiece was a scale model of the future Neva River bridge, part of the Wide Latitude High-Speed Highway.
The construction contract had been signed just before the forum, drawing considerable attention to the model. Visitors noted the detail of its design and the care taken to complement the neighboring Finland Railway Bridge, a protected historical landmark. The bridge will be built by NPS subsidiary Roads and Bridges and engineered by the NPS Giprostroymost SPB Institute.

An interactive panel presented a joint project by the St. Petersburg city administration, NPS GC and Sber to expand the tram network in the city’s southern districts. Attendees explored the details and traced the new routes on a city map.

P.S. From model to milestone.

Russia’s first high-speed railway will boost six regions across the board, from jobs and training to local manufacturing, NPS GC’s First Deputy CEO for Production Nikolai Russu said at an Avtodor session at SPIEF 2026.

To hit speeds of up to 400 km/h across a wide temperature range, Russia is developing its own rolling stock and specialist rail. NPS GC is leading several of these efforts, including a slab track design with no existing alternative.
Russu stressed this is only the beginning, with the company investing in equipment, technology, and training to replicate its expertise across future high-speed projects, many involving engineering solutions never before used in Russia.

NPS GC is building out a full industrial base across four regions along the route, with automated slab track plants, precast girder yards, and precast pile facilities already coming online this year.

P.S. HSR technology, built from scratch.
