The yakhchal is one of the most practical inventions of ancient Persia, designed to store ice and keep food cold in desert climates without electricity. Built as tall, dome-shaped structures with thick mud-brick walls, they relied on insulation, evaporative cooling, and underground storage.

In winter, ice was collected from nearby mountains or formed in shallow pools during cold nights, then stored in deep pits below ground. The shape helped trap cold air, while warmer air rose and escaped through openings at the top.

Some yakhchals were paired with windcatchers to improve airflow and cooling efficiency, allowing ice to last through long, hot summers in cities like Yazd.

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge connects Kobe with Awaji Island and holds the record for the longest central span in the world.

Opened in 1998, it stretches nearly 4 kilometers, with a main span of 1,991 meters. The bridge was designed to handle some of the toughest conditions on Earth. Strong ocean currents, typhoons, and frequent earthquakes all had to be factored in.

During construction, the Great Hanshin Earthquake shifted the towers apart by almost a meter, forcing engineers to adjust the design in real time.

Despite that, the structure remained intact. Flexibility, not rigidity, is what keeps it standing.

Yuyuan Garden Station on Line 14 sits right under one of the oldest parts of Shanghai, near the City God Temple and the Bund.

It opened in 2021 and is the deepest station in the city.

The ceiling is what you notice first. It moves in soft, continuous waves, a quiet nod to the Huangpu River above. The curves also echo traditional rooflines, but in a very subtle way.

Line 14 operates without drivers and is designed for continuous, high-frequency movement across the city. It connects major districts with precise timing and a system that relies heavily on automation rather than manual control.

The Qinghai-Tibet Railway is often called the highest railway in the world.

It runs from Xining in Qinghai Province to Lhasa, crossing about 1,956 kilometers of mountains.

The highest point is Tanggula Station, at 5,068 meters above sea level. At this altitude, temperatures can drop to around -40ยฐC, and the air is noticeably thinner.

To keep passengers safe, trains are pressurized and equipped with onboard oxygen systems.

Building the line was a major engineering challenge. Workers had to stabilize frozen soil, manage landslides, and deal with extreme cold, all while minimizing damage to the fragile Tibetan Plateau ecosystem.

Set within a dense coastal rainforest near Vancouver, the Capilano Suspension Bridge is one of the areaโ€™s most visited landmarks.

It stretches 137 meters across the Capilano River, about 70 meters above the canyon floor. First built in 1889 by engineer George Grant Mackay as a rope-and-plank crossing, it has been rebuilt several times into the steel suspension bridge seen today.

The structure moves slightly underfoot. That movement is intentional, allowing it to respond to wind and shifting weight.

Now part of a larger park with canopy walkways and cliffside paths, it turns a short crossing into a full immersion in the landscape.

The Three Gorges Dam is one of the largest hydroelectric power stations ever built.

It sits on the Yangtze River in Hubei Province and stretches across the valley for about 2.3 kilometers. The structure rises around 180 meters and holds back a reservoir that extends far upstream.

Construction took more than a decade, with full operation beginning in 2012. Building it meant relocating entire towns and reshaping parts of the river system itself.

The dam produces large amounts of electricity, supplying regional grids and reducing reliance on coal in several provinces.

Two residential towers in Milan, known as the Bosco Verticale, rethink what high-rise living can look like.

Completed in 2014, the two towers are 80 and 112 meters tall and are covered with more than 900 trees, along with thousands of shrubs and plants. Instead of a typical facade, the buildings use vegetation as a living outer layer.

The project was designed by architect Stefano Boeri, who focused on bringing biodiversity into dense urban environments rather than separating nature from the city.

The greenery helps reduce heat, filter air, and create a more stable microclimate.

Fulton Center in Lower Manhattan is one of the main transfer points in New Yorkโ€™s subway system.

Around 300,000 passengers pass through it daily, making it one of the busiest transit hubs in the area.

Opened in 2014, it brings together multiple subway lines under one roof, connecting different parts of the city through a central underground concourse. It sits above the historic Fulton Street station complex, which was rebuilt after decades of fragmented layouts and difficult transfers.

The project was designed by Santiago Calatrava, who is known for treating structure and movement as part of the same idea.

The standout element is the oculus above ground. Inside, light is captured and directed down into the station through a curved steel-and-glass system, turning daylight into part of navigation below.

The Glacier Express is one of Switzerlandโ€™s best-known train routes.

Not exactly an express, it is famous for being one of the slowest trains in the world. The route connects Zermatt and St. Moritz and takes around eight hours to complete.

Across 291 kilometers, the train passes through alpine valleys, small villages, and high mountain passes. Along the way, it crosses 291 bridges and travels through 91 tunnels, including the well-known Landwasser Viaduct.

Large panoramic windows are part of the design, making the surrounding landscape part of the journey itself.

Designed by Emil and Georg Zillmann, the Szombierki Power Station is a Modernist masterpiece and one of Polandโ€™s "Seven Architectural Wonders." This red-brick landmark features austere cubist forms and three massive chimneys, the tallest reaching 120 meters.

Originally, it conceived in 1917 as a WWI gunpowder factory. By its peak, the plant reached a capacity of 100 MW, solidifying its status as one of Europeโ€™s largest power facilities. Eventually, it converted into a combined heat and power (CHP) station in the 1970s.

Peaking in 1944, the plant served as a city reserve and briefly gained award-winning fame as a cultural venue just prior to its 2011 decommissioning. Today, it remains a backup industrial site and historical landmark, with its potential transformation into a permanent cultural hub yet to be realized.

NPS GC and Uzbekistan Railways to localize railway automation production in Uzbekistan.

A memorandum was signed at the "Innoprom. Central Asia" forum by Alexey Soshnikov (ELTEZA) and Sharafiddin Kadyrov (Uzbekistan Railways).
NPS GC will intentionally provide technical support and train Uzbekistan Railways specialists at its manufacturing sites.

The potentially localized equipment list includes interlocking and signaling systems, axle counters, point machines, LED signals, digital comms, and HSR traffic control systems.

Frankfurtโ€™s Bockenheimer Warte: Where Infrastructure Meets Art

Located in Frankfurt, Germany, the Bockenheimer Warte station is a place where daily life and art intersect.

The stationโ€™s main entrance is designed to look like a vintage tram car "diving" into the pavement. This surreal project was designed by Zbigniew Peter Pininski, who found inspiration in the works of Renรฉ Magritte, a renowned artist famous for shifting the viewer's perception of reality.

The construction took 15 years before the station finally opened in 1986. Despite planned modernizations in 2001, the unique entrance was preserved. Today, Bockenheimer Warte remains one of the city's most iconic and striking architectural landmarks.

Stockholmโ€™s Kungstrรคdgรฅrden (โ€œRoyal Gardenโ€) metro station really does live up to its name. Walking in feels like stepping into another world.

It opened in 1977 and is one of the deepest stations in the capital, sitting 34 metres below ground and 29.3 metres below sea level. Designers Ulrik Samuelsson and Arne Fredriksson took their cues from the palaces above. Bare rock vaults are covered in bright mosaics, set off by murals and bits salvaged from demolished buildings: old statues, carved columns, pieces of fountains.
The underground garden has even developed its own ecosystem. Rare moss, insects and cave spiders live here, found nowhere else in Sweden and probably brought in from Southern Europe.
