Budapest’s Metro Line 1, often called the Millennium Underground, opened in 1896 and became the first metro in continental Europe. Just 4.4 km and 11 stations, with Franz Joseph I attending the launch.

For its time, it was seriously advanced. The line was built using the cut-and-cover method, with electric concrete mixers and early excavators. The trains were electric and powered by overhead wires, more like trams than modern metros.

Today, the Yellow Line still looks almost the same. Tiled stations, cast iron details, low ceilings.

It is now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In Colombia, mountains and rivers make crossing the landscape a real challenge.

One answer to that is the Puente de Occidente, completed in 1895 over the Cauca River near Santa Fe de Antioquia. It was designed by JosΓ© MarΓ­a Villa, an engineer who trained in the USA and worked on the Brooklyn Bridge.

But Colombia was not New York. There were no easy supply routes. Materials arrived by mule, and steel cables had to be taken apart, carried piece by piece through the mountains, then assembled again on site.

The result is a 291 meter suspension bridge that once ranked among the longest of its kind. Light, narrow, and still in use.

Despite sanctions and restricted access to the global financial system, Russian businesses are finding new ways to expand into international markets, said Dmitry Bolotsky, Deputy CEO for Commerce at GC NPS, speaking at the International Transport and Logistics Forum.

A railway for ships sounds unusual, but that’s exactly what you’ll find at the Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Dam.

Built in 1976 and launched in 1982, this ship lift carries vessels over the dam, raising them more than 100 meters along a 1.5 km track. It remains the only system of its kind in Russia.

The process is straightforward. A platform lowers below water level, the ship moves onto it, and the ascent begins. Powered by electric traction, the structure moves slowly but steadily up the incline.

In North Korea, visitors usually see only carefully chosen places.

One of them is the Pyongyang metro, among the deepest in the world. For years, foreigners were allowed to travel only between two stations, including Yonggwang Station, designed to show the system at its finest.

Opened in 1987, the station features marble and granite walls, rows of columns, and bright flower-shaped chandeliers. Large murals along the platform depict Pyongyang in spring, and a mosaic shows Lake Chon on Mount Paektu.

In Japan, crowded trains are almost a legend of their own. At peak hours, staff were even hired to gently push passengers into already packed carriages.

In the 1970s, trains on the Keihan Electric Railway line reached up to 250% capacity. Adding more trains was not an option, so engineers had to rethink the design itself.

The result was the Keihan 5000 series. Each carriage had five doors per side instead of three. To make space, seats could be lifted up above the doors during rush hour, then lowered again when the crowds cleared.

These trains are now being retired as modern platform systems are introduced.

Istanbul is one of the few cities that sits on two continents, Europe and Asia, divided by the Bosphorus. Today, they are connected not just by bridges, but by the Marmaray rail line running beneath the water.

The project was built to ease constant traffic pressure. Roads and ferries could no longer keep up, so the solution went underground.

The tunnel runs about 60 meters below the seabed and stretches for nearly 1.5 km underwater. Built in sealed sections and designed for earthquakes, it can handle extreme conditions.

Deep inside New Athos Cave in Abkhazia, there’s a small underground railway that takes visitors through the mountain.

Opened in 1975, the line runs about 1.3 km with a narrow 914 mm gauge. It connects three stations: Entrance Gate, Anakopia Hall, and Apsny Hall. Trains move at up to 30 km/h, taking passengers deep underground before bringing them back to the entrance.

One detail stands out. The driver’s controls are installed only at one end of the train, so on the return trip the train moves forward but the driver is effectively facing the rear, with no direct view of the track ahead.

The Millau Viaduct stretches across the Tarn Valley in southern France, so high that on some days it almost disappears into the clouds.

Opened in 2004, it holds the record as the tallest bridge in the world. The highest point reaches 343 meters, making it taller than the Eiffel Tower. It was built to bypass the slow drive through the valley and keep traffic moving.

What stands out is how light it feels. The piers are thin, the deck is narrow, and from a distance the whole structure looks almost unreal.

The yakhchal is one of the most practical inventions of ancient Persia, designed to store ice and keep food cold in desert climates without electricity. Built as tall, dome-shaped structures with thick mud-brick walls, they relied on insulation, evaporative cooling, and underground storage.

In winter, ice was collected from nearby mountains or formed in shallow pools during cold nights, then stored in deep pits below ground. The shape helped trap cold air, while warmer air rose and escaped through openings at the top.

Some yakhchals were paired with windcatchers to improve airflow and cooling efficiency, allowing ice to last through long, hot summers in cities like Yazd.

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge connects Kobe with Awaji Island and holds the record for the longest central span in the world.

Opened in 1998, it stretches nearly 4 kilometers, with a main span of 1,991 meters. The bridge was designed to handle some of the toughest conditions on Earth. Strong ocean currents, typhoons, and frequent earthquakes all had to be factored in.

During construction, the Great Hanshin Earthquake shifted the towers apart by almost a meter, forcing engineers to adjust the design in real time.

Despite that, the structure remained intact. Flexibility, not rigidity, is what keeps it standing.
