The Jungfrau Railway runs from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe at 3,454 meters. In about 35 minutes, the train climbs more than 1,400 meters into the Swiss Alps.
Construction began in 1896 and lasted until 1912. Engineers cut long tunnels through solid rock, and today about two thirds of the line runs inside the mountain. Because the slopes are extremely steep, a cogwheel system is used instead of a standard railway.
The project was led by Adolf Guyer-Zeller, who wanted to make the Alps accessible. He did not live to see it completed, but the railway turned a hard-to-reach area into a major destination.

In 1777, Georg Christoph Lichtenberg noticed something unusual. Electrical sparks left behind delicate, branching marks on glass and resin.
As the charge spreads across a non-conductive surface, it forms tree-like patterns. Lichtenberg made them visible by dusting the surface with powder and pressing paper onto it.
These figures later laid the groundwork for xerography, the technology behind modern photocopying. Today, artists recreate similar forms using high voltage, but it is not something to try at home.
Similar “electric forests” can appear on power line insulators. When they form inside the material, it can signal potential equipment failure.

Built to a 750 mm gauge, the line once ran for hundreds of kilometers, first carrying charcoal and later timber. As those industries declined, so did freight traffic, and by the late 1990s it was used mostly for passengers.
Today, only about 177 km remain. The tracks are worn, but trains still run, carrying people and supplies in areas with limited transport options.

Then the true star appears. A full-size steam locomotive rolls onto the stage on rails. Solid, deliberate, and impossible to miss, it makes the story feel tangible. The train travels through the set, becoming part of the action itself.

The station lies in the heart of Naples, named “Università” because it serves the nearby university district, and descends 30 meters below the city. Opened in 2011, it is part of a project to transform ordinary metro stops into art spaces. Architect Alessandro Mendini designed the structure, while Canadian industrial designer Karim Rashid created the vibrant interior.
From the first step, it is clear this is no typical subway. Walls shimmer with bold colors, abstract shapes fill the space, and the staircase features portraits of Dante Alighieri and Beatrice.
One hall houses the “Synopsis” installation, with droplets appearing suspended in midair. Nearby, two columns called “Dialogue” hint at a playful pop-culture reference.

One answer to that is the Puente de Occidente, completed in 1895 over the Cauca River near Santa Fe de Antioquia. It was designed by José María Villa, an engineer who trained in the USA and worked on the Brooklyn Bridge.
But Colombia was not New York. There were no easy supply routes. Materials arrived by mule, and steel cables had to be taken apart, carried piece by piece through the mountains, then assembled again on site.
The result is a 291 meter suspension bridge that once ranked among the longest of its kind. Light, narrow, and still in use.
