Popov was born in 1859 in the Ural region of the Russian Empire. He studied at St. Petersburg University and later taught physics, where he carried out experiments with electricity and electromagnetic waves.
Building on the discoveries of Heinrich Hertz, Popov explored how these waves could transmit signals. In 1895 he demonstrated a device capable of detecting radio waves, one of the first radio receivers. Soon after, he transmitted a wireless Morse code message that read “Heinrich Hertz.”
Today radio technology is used worldwide, supporting communication in many fields, including transport and railway systems.

In 2024, a strange theft took place in Skopin, Ryazan Region. Locals reportedly sawed apart a 60-ton railway bridge. The operation took a couple of days, and the bridge parts were sold as scrap metal.
Strangely enough, this isn’t the only bridge to “disappear” in recent memory. Around the world, thieves seem undeterred by size, weight, or practical use.

Construction began in 1896 and lasted until 1912. Engineers cut long tunnels through solid rock, and today about two thirds of the line runs inside the mountain. Because the slopes are extremely steep, a cogwheel system is used instead of a standard railway.
The project was led by Adolf Guyer-Zeller, who wanted to make the Alps accessible. He did not live to see it completed, but the railway turned a hard-to-reach area into a major destination.

In 1777, Georg Christoph Lichtenberg noticed something unusual. Electrical sparks left behind delicate, branching marks on glass and resin.
As the charge spreads across a non-conductive surface, it forms tree-like patterns. Lichtenberg made them visible by dusting the surface with powder and pressing paper onto it.
These figures later laid the groundwork for xerography, the technology behind modern photocopying. Today, artists recreate similar forms using high voltage, but it is not something to try at home.
Similar “electric forests” can appear on power line insulators. When they form inside the material, it can signal potential equipment failure.
