If you’ve ever imagined working in space, your next job site could be 384,400 kilometers away.

In late 2025, Roscosmos partnered with NPO Lavochkin to develop a lunar power station targeted for 2036. It’s designed to supply energy to a permanent research base, likely using a nuclear or hybrid system to survive the Moon’s long nights.

The proposed site is the lunar South Pole, where water ice deposits could enable long-term habitation and fuel production. Robotic rovers will prepare the terrain before any human crews arrive.

At the same time, a U.S. startup aims to launch a lunar hotel by 2032, with inflatable modules for small groups. Estimated cost: $416,000 per night.

These mysterious formations were found in the deserts of Ancient Egypt, Sumer, and Mesopotamia and were once believed to hold magical energy.

When lightning strikes the ground, it leaves behind its signature - a fulgurite.

Fulgurites are fragile, hollow tubes formed when extreme heat fuses sand and silica in an instant. In wet sand they branch like roots; in rock they create glassy veins and fused droplets. Though only a few centimeters wide, they can extend 2 to 15 meters into the ground.

In 1706, German pastor David Hermann linked these “glassy tubes” to lightning. Charles Darwin later described examples in Uruguay, and scientists have since documented them from South America to Central Yakutia.

Old Masters rarely centered their compositions on infrastructure. Yet in The Battle of the Amazons, Peter Paul Rubens does exactly that. The bridge is not background. It is the engine of the scene.

Herodotus never described a bridge here. Rubens inserted one because he needed structure, literally and visually. A wide battlefield disperses drama. A bridge concentrates it. It creates vertical movement, falling figures, diagonals, instability. It allows chaos to be choreographed.

Rubens, raised among the canals of Antwerp and shaped by Italy’s arched crossings, understood how a single bridge can guide movement. Here, it guides outcome.

Walk into Formosa Boulevard Station in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and it hardly feels like a metro stop. The space unfolds into a sweeping display of color and light that instantly draws your gaze upward.

Suspended above the main hall is the Dome of Light, the largest glass installation in the world. Stretching 30 meters in diameter and spanning more than 2,180 square meters, it is composed of 4,500 glass panels created from sketches by Italian artist Narcissus Quagliata.

The artwork is divided into four themes: water, earth, light, and fire, symbolizing the cycle of human life. By day, the colors feel soft and almost weightless. After dark, they grow richer and more luminous, bathing the station in a vibrant glow.

Surprisingly, the vast structure rests on just two columns. With four glass entrances echoing the same idea of transparency and motion, this is a place where everyday transit turns unforgettable.

Every year in Australia, steam engines go head to head.

Not museum pieces behind a rope, but working steam locomotives built more than a century ago. They thunder down the tracks in clouds of smoke, wheels hammering the rails, and whistles screaming.

The run follows the 30 kilometer stretch between Newcastle and Maitland. Usually two to four trains take part, each packed with passengers who cheer their engine on as if it were a favorite race car.

It feels part history lesson, part sporting event. The next race is set for mid April. Two locomotives, both over a hundred years old, will line up once again to prove that speed and spirit do not retire.

In 1888, Bertha Benz did something remarkable. At a time when women were rarely encouraged to participate in science or engineering, she set out to prove that the automobile actually worked.

Without telling her husband, Karl Benz, she took his experimental car, the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, and drove about 106 km from Mannheim to Pforzheim and back.

The journey required some improvisation. She cleared a clogged fuel line with a hatpin, insulated a wire with her garter, and stopped at a pharmacy to buy ligroin, effectively creating the first fuel stop.

Fittingly, her story is often recalled around International Women's Day as a reminder that women have shaped technological history in bold and unexpected ways.

The surface of the ocean is always in motion. Wave generators are designed to capture that movement and convert it into electricity.

One early attempt appeared off the coast of Aguçadoura in Portugal in 2008 with machines from Pelamis Wave Power. The 120-meter structures looked like metal sea snakes floating on the surface. As waves bent their sections, hydraulic systems inside powered electric generators.

A newer design comes from CorPower Ocean. Their device resembles a large buoy that moves up and down while anchored to the seabed. The motion generates electricity that travels to shore through an underwater cable. In tests in 2023 it produced about 600 kW and survived storm waves over 18 meters high.

Wave power is promising, but the ocean is a harsh environment. Saltwater and storms make the technology difficult and expensive.

Temperatures around -20°C nearly brought wind power generation in Finland to a halt. Ice formed on turbine blades, forcing operators to cut output.

But wind turbines north of the Arctic Circle operate in far harsher conditions. In the Arctic settlement of Tiksi, a wind-diesel power complex has been running since 2019, combining three wind turbines with diesel generators, energy storage, and automated controls.

Winter temperatures here often fall below -40°C, yet the turbines keep operating. Heated hydraulic systems and anti-icing coatings on the towers and blades help prevent snow and ice buildup.

According to Yakutskenergo, the complex has produced over 8.2 million kWh of electricity since its launch.

March 16 marks the birthday of Alexander Popov, one of the scientists who helped shape the early development of radio communication.

Popov was born in 1859 in the Ural region of the Russian Empire. He studied at St. Petersburg University and later taught physics, where he carried out experiments with electricity and electromagnetic waves.

Building on the discoveries of Heinrich Hertz, Popov explored how these waves could transmit signals. In 1895 he demonstrated a device capable of detecting radio waves, one of the first radio receivers. Soon after, he transmitted a wireless Morse code message that read “Heinrich Hertz.”

Today radio technology is used worldwide, supporting communication in many fields, including transport and railway systems.

SunRise Tower, a 12 story residential building in Alberta, Canada, was once headed for demolition. Instead, it became the center of an unusual renovation that earned a place in the Guinness World Records. The building now showcases the world’s largest mural made with integrated solar panels.

The 3,205-square-meter mural was created by Indigenous artist Lance Cardinal. His design stretches across the entire façade, mixing cultural patterns with modern energy technology. The image was digitally printed, and the colors were chosen carefully so sunlight can still reach the hidden solar panels.

The panels are embedded directly into the building using BIPV technology. The ventilated façade helps with insulation and moisture control. Altogether, the system produces roughly 267 kilowatts, significantly lowering the building’s energy costs.

In 2024, a strange theft took place in Skopin, Ryazan Region. Locals reportedly sawed apart a 60-ton railway bridge. The operation took a couple of days, and the bridge parts were sold as scrap metal.

Strangely enough, this isn’t the only bridge to “disappear” in recent memory. Around the world, thieves seem undeterred by size, weight, or practical use.

Ohio, USA. In the park of the small town of Akron, a pedestrian bridge in a park disappeared. Mostly made of polymers with a steel frame, it still required a truck and crane to move. Why anyone would steal a bridge that wasn’t even worth much remains a mystery.

Bihar, India. An 18‑meter cast‑iron bridge weighing 500 tons vanished. Thieves posed as local Irrigation Department officials, claiming the old bridge was unsafe and needed removal. Local residents didn’t suspect a thing.

Ankara, Turkey. An enterprising scrap dealer walked away with a 500-meter bridge. The thief claimed the bridge had been out of use since the late ’70s, damaged by flooding, so technically… he was “recycling” an idle structure.

Often called the “Pride of Africa,” the luxury train operated by Rovos Rail has offered old-world journeys across southern Africa since 1989. Many of its carriages were originally built in Europe in the early 20th century and restored with polished wood, rich fabrics, and soft vintage lighting.

The suites are among the largest on any luxury train, providing a spacious yet intimate experience for about 72 passengers. On board are elegant dining cars, lounges, a library, and at the rear, an open observation platform to enjoy Africa’s vast landscapes.

Life on board follows a relaxed pace. There are no TVs, internet is limited, and a dress code applies. Evenings are formal, with jackets for men and elegant attire for women.

Melbourne is home to the world’s largest tram network, with over 250 km of track. First launched in the 1880s, it now operates around 24 routes and roughly 1,700 stops, with about 500 trams carrying more than 150 million passengers each year.

Modern trams run alongside vintage mid-20th-century models, adding character to the city’s streets. There’s even a restaurant tram where you can enjoy a meal while taking in the views.

The network is largely radial, with a small loop around the central business district, and lines running along major streets to provide efficient north–south and east–west connections
