When railways first appeared in Russia, they quickly began carrying not only passengers but food. Before long, the idea of shipping rare regional delicacies across the vast country became irresistible.

In the beginning, deliveries were made only for the Imperial Court. One of the most memorable traditions was the arrival of the “first royal catch” from the Ural Cossacks. The Emperor received the shipment in person, and the couriers were rewarded with watches for bringing such valuable treats.

Large-scale food transport became possible only after the first ice-cooled freight cars were introduced. Their design was basic. Blocks of ice were packed into side compartments, and more ice was added along the way. In 1898, there were only around 50 of these cars in operation. Ten years later, there were more than two thousand.

In September 1913, railway workers bought 10 refrigerated cars from different manufacturers and sent a test train to the Caucasus. At the time, it was the longest “cold cargo” route ever attempted, lasting ten days. Fish and dairy products arrived in perfect condition. On the return journey, the same wagons delivered fresh fruit.

In Japan, an abandoned railway line between Namaze and Takeda has been transformed into a unique pedestrian route.

The trail follows the former railway bed through the Mukogawa Gorge. Along the way are six abandoned tunnels, suspension bridges, old railway signs, and original sleepers still underfoot. The experience feels like walking through a paused chapter of history. Nature is slowly reclaiming the infrastructure, with moss covering stonework and grass growing between the tracks.

The route is about five kilometers long and doesn’t require any special equipment. The only essential item is a flashlight, since some tunnels are long enough to be completely dark inside.

The late 17th and early 18th centuries are known as the Golden Age of Piracy. Pirates chose well-protected bays close to major trade routes as their bases. Here are three iconic ports of the Caribbean that became centers of pirate activity and safe havens beyond the reach of the law.

One of the major pirate strongholds was Tortuga Island, a rocky island between Haiti and Cuba. Its name comes from its turtle-shell shape. The pirate community there was made up mainly of French and English settlers, with a small number of Dutch. Today, Tortuga belongs to Haiti, and only a few scattered cannons remain as reminders of its violent past.

On the southern coast of Jamaica, Port Royal became another key pirate harbor. It controlled sea routes between Spain and Panama and served as a base for raids on Panama and Venezuela led by Henry Morgan. Local authorities tolerated piracy, and Morgan himself was appointed lieutenant governor of Jamaica three times. In 1692, a devastating earthquake sent about two-thirds of the city underwater. Epidemics followed, then fires and hurricanes, and Port Royal lost its status as Jamaica’s capital.

Further east, in the Bahamas, the port of Nassau on New Providence Island became the heart of the Golden Age of Piracy. English pirates such as Edward Teach, Anne Bonny, and Charles Vane found refuge here. For a time, Nassau existed in near anarchy until Britain reasserted control. Today, the island’s tropical climate attracts tourists, while its pirate past lives on in local museums.

Speaking of museums, not a single one has an original pirate flag, since none survived. These flags were made from cheap cloth and were constantly exposed to harsh sunlight, wind, and saltwater. When pirate ships were captured by authorities, the flags were simply destroyed. However, there are six to eight historically documented pirate flag designs, which inspired the thousands of replicas we see today.

When you think of sledding, you probably picture snowy hills and fast descents. But in the world of railways, freight cars have their own version of the thrill.

A classification yard is a crucial part of a railway system, designed to efficiently sort freight cars into the right trains. The standout feature of these yards is the hump, a raised section of track that uses gravity to help with the sorting process.

In a hump yard, a locomotive pushes a group of freight cars up the incline to the top of the hump. Once they reach the crest, the cars are uncoupled and allowed to roll down the tracks, guided solely by gravity.

The entire process is controlled by automated systems. Retarders (braking systems) slow the cars as they descend, ensuring they move at a safe speed. Meanwhile, track switches automatically adjust to make sure the cars follow the right path.

One of the most advanced classification yards in Russia is located at Luzhskaya station. Designed by Lengiprotrans, a GC NPS subsidiary, it uses state-of-the-art systems to optimize the sorting and assembly of freight trains.

The Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) is a feat of engineering, stretching across one of the harshest terrains on the planet. From the Northern Muya Range to the Dusse-Alin Mountains, it cuts through continuous permafrost. Constructing and maintaining a railway in such conditions presents serious challenges, but it has also led to innovative engineering solutions.

One of the most important methods used to stabilize the ground is a cooling embankment technique. The goal is to ensure track integrity by keeping the soil beneath cold. Slopes along the railway are covered with thick layers of large stones. This special "blanket" blocks direct sunlight and preserves low temperatures.

In the extreme conditions of the Siberian wilderness, the BAM stands as a remarkable example of how modern engineering can adapt to nature, making seemingly impossible projects a reality.

In the middle of the nineteenth century, mountains were still seen as barriers and railways as a daring experiment. Yet in the Alps, engineers decided to send trains where even walking paths were scarce. This ambition gave rise to the Semmering Railway, the first mountain railway ever built.

Constructed between 1848 and 1854, the line was designed by architect Carl von Ghega. It crosses the Semmering Pass and links the towns of Gloggnitz and Mürzzuschlag, cutting directly through one of the most challenging landscapes in Central Europe.

The railway runs at elevations close to one thousand meters above sea level. To master the terrain, builders carved fourteen tunnels into the rock, erected sixteen viaducts, some of them double-storied, and constructed more than a hundred bridges. Even today, most standard trains can’t handle the steep climbs and tight curves that make up the majority of the route.

What makes the project exceptional is its philosophy. Ghega aimed to create harmony between technology and nature. He described the railway as a landscaped composition rather than a purely technical structure.

As a result, the Semmering Railway became an engineering milestone seamlessly woven into the Alpine scenery. Trains speed through deep valleys, disappear into tunnels, while presenting unparalleled panoramic views of the mountains to passengers. In 1998, the Semmering Railway was recognized as the world’s first railway line to receive UNESCO World Heritage status.

Imagine riding through a plain on your noble steed, golden fields and waving grass stretching to the horizon. In the midst of this untouched beauty, a deep river suddenly appears. You make out the shape of a small bridge not too far away. After a fortnight on the move, you’re exhausted and penniless after multiple tavern stops.

Yesterday’s pint of mead is still hitting you, but you’re just a bridge crossing away from your beloved lassie’s town. The handkerchief she gifted you still carries the scent of wildflowers, and you dream of lovingly embracing your sweetheart. But dream is all you will do. In the middle of the bridge, you are turned around by a dutiful tollkeeper, whose laugh at your empty coin purse still echoes.

Who is to blame? Well, the feudal lords of course.

Bridges served a very direct secondary purpose: moneymaking. Lords had power and plenty of rights, including the authority to charge a fee for crossing bridges on their territory. The cleverest quickly realized it was a great business opportunity. Build a bridge, and that desired passive and very legal income was yours.

Some of the most famous toll bridges in medieval Europe include Pont d’Avignon in France, London Bridge in England, and Clopton Bridge in Stratford‑upon‑Avon. Fees were collected from anyone crossing on foot, horseback, or by cart.

To formalize this, medieval law in England, Wales, and Ireland introduced pontage: licenses that allowed landowners or towns to collect tolls specifically to build or repair bridges. Pontage ensured that tolls were legal, regulated, and tied to the maintenance of real infrastructure rather than arbitrary taxation.

Even in seemingly flat or shallow regions of Europe, these bridges were practical and profitable. Travelers could cross dozens of feudal territories in a single day, each lord demanding their coin.

The Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland is a railway tunnel whose story began with space technology.

To achieve the required precision, satellites were used to mark key surface points before construction started. Even the smallest errors would have meant major costs. After seventeen years of work, the tunnel opened in 2016.

Running beneath the Saint Gotthard massif in the Lepontine Alps, it directly connects northern and southern Europe by rail. At 57.1 kilometers long, it is one of the longest railway tunnels in the world. The depth of the mountains above pushes temperatures inside the tunnel up to 46°C, so cooling systems were installed to manage the heat.

The tunnel consists of two parallel tubes with cross passages every 325 meters. Today, it helps shift freight from roads to rail and cuts travel time between Zurich and Milan to just 2 hours and 50 minutes.

Would you like to step aboard Jules Verne’s legendary Nautilus? In Paris, you almost can.

The Arts et Métiers station feels like a journey into a retro-futuristic submarine. Although the station first opened in 1904, its current design appeared much later. In 1994, it was completely redesigned to mark the anniversary of the nearby National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts.

The interior was created by Belgian artist François Schuiten. Copper panels and round portholes line the platform, while glowing lighting evokes the depths of the ocean. Gears embedded in the ceiling and display windows along the walls showcase models of historic inventions, from early machines to space technology.

It is one of the most unusual metro stations in the world, and a reminder that even everyday infrastructure can tell a story.

The California Zephyr is one of the most scenic long distance rail routes in the United States, carrying passengers along its 3,924 kilometer journey between Chicago and San Francisco.

The train passes through seven states including Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and California. In winter, the journey becomes a breathtaking immersion in snow and ice. At times, snowdrifts rise higher than the train itself, visible just beyond the glass. Canyons turn into frozen galleries, trees shimmer with icicles, the Colorado River partially freezes, and snow covered cliffs loom overhead.

The route takes more than 50 hours to complete, giving passengers ample time to take in the the scenery. Panoramic windows offer the best vantage point, allowing travellers to fully appreciate the dramatic shifts in landscape along the way.

The modern California Zephyr is a newer version of the original train, which was operated by a private company from the 1940s to the 1970s. That earlier service took an alternate route through Nevada and California.
