Delivering millions of New Year’s gifts is no small feat, and reliable transport is essential. Russia’s Ded Moroz famously rides across snowy fields in a three-horse troika. But how do his colleagues around the world get from house to house?

In Finland, Joulupukki makes rounds on a reindeer sleigh, and Santa Claus in the United States relies on the same hooved aerodynamics. In France, Père Noël prefers a more modest ride: a patient little donkey who carries him from village to village.

Sinterklaas, the festive grandfather from Belgium and the Netherlands, chooses full-scale multimodal logistics. He crosses the sea by steamboat, then switches to a white horse on land. The horse’s name varies by region: Amerigo, Bianca, or, more poetically, β€œBad Weather Today.”

Christmas lights are a must-have for the holiday season. They glow on trees, rooftops, windows, instantly setting that magical winter mood.

But have you ever wondered how many strings of lights a single power plant could power?

Let’s take the Svobodny Thermal Power Plant as an example. It was designed and built from the ground up by TEK Mosenergo, a GC NPS subsidiary.

The plant’s current capacity is 160 megawatts, or 160,000,000 watts of electricity. With that amount of power, you could turn on 53 million strands of Christmas lights, each about 5 meters long and using 3 watts.
If you untangled stretched those lights out end to end, you would get a glowing ribbon almost 266,666 meters long. That is enough to wrap around the Earth more than six times!

And that is not the limit. There are plans to expand the Svobodny TPP with a new 450 megawatt unit. That means even more energy and a whole lot more light.

Every year, people in Russia enjoy about 800,000 tons of tangerines. That is a serious amount of citrus. If you poured them loose into standard freight cars, they would stretch out as a train more than 260 kilometers long. A line of fruit almost too long to imagine.

Most of these sunny fruits arrive from Turkey, Morocco, Abkhazia and South Africa. Their bright color and fresh scent have made them a New Year staple.

The northernmost railway in the world is the Obskaya - Bovanenkovo line. It was designed by Lengiprotrans, a GC NPS subsidiary, to support the development of gas fields on the Yamal Peninsula.

Rail transport proved to be the only consistently reliable option in the Arctic climate. Building it across permafrost required a unique two-stage approach. First, frozen soil along the future route was dug out and thawed to remove excess moisture. The next winter, this dried soil was placed inside geotextile sleeves to create a stable embankment that can withstand extreme temperatures.

The most challenging structure on the route is the Yuribey Bridge, which is 3.9 kilometers long and the largest bridge beyond the Arctic Circle. Its piles reach up to 40 meters deep into frozen ground. The floodplain was constructed without added soil to protect the river ecosystem and its wildlife.

This railway provides year-round access to the gas fields and improves connections for local Nenets communities.

On the northern section of the Baikal - Amur Mainline, winter has already taken hold. Work here means sub-zero temperatures, frozen ground, and long shifts outdoors.

Cold conditions dictate how construction is organized. Heavy machinery often remains running so engines and hydraulics do not freeze. Fuel use rises by about 20 percent, and crews depend on engine pre-heaters and portable heat blowers to keep equipment operational.

Proper gear is essential: thermal layers, insulated clothing and boots, gloves that stay flexible in cold weather. Mobile heating stations and hot drinks help everyone stay safe and focused.

Winter also introduces technical challenges. Permafrost can shift soil, and access roads need regular ice removal to stay passable.

At the same time, the season creates opportunities. Frozen marshes and soft soil become solid, allowing machinery and materials to reach places that are inaccessible in summer. On the Khani - Tynda section, winter is the best time to strengthen embankments, improve drainage, and prepare the ground for future work.

Long before modern air conditioning, people in the Middle East knew how to survive extreme heat through intelligent design. One of the most impressive solutions came from ancient Iran and is known as the badgir or windcatcher.

A badgir is a tall tower rising above a building and connected to the rooms below. Inside, it is divided into several vertical channels facing different directions. When wind blows, cooler air is captured by the tower and directed downward, pushing warm air out. When the air is still, hot air rises and escapes through the tower, while cooler air is drawn inside naturally.

This simple system could lower indoor temperatures by 10 to 12 degrees Celsius.

A similar structure was used in Egypt, the malqaf, though these usually had only one air channel. In Iran, badgirs varied by region. In dry cities like Yazd they were built tall to catch cooler air. In dusty areas such as Meybod they were lower and featured an opening on one side. In the humid south they were wide and short to work with weak winds.

Badgirs were also built above underground water reservoirs, keeping water remarkably cool even in the scorching desert heat. These towers are a reminder that sustainable architecture is not a modern invention but ancient knowledge rediscovered.

When railways first appeared in Russia, they quickly began carrying not only passengers but food. Before long, the idea of shipping rare regional delicacies across the vast country became irresistible.

In the beginning, deliveries were made only for the Imperial Court. One of the most memorable traditions was the arrival of the β€œfirst royal catch” from the Ural Cossacks. The Emperor received the shipment in person, and the couriers were rewarded with watches for bringing such valuable treats.

Large-scale food transport became possible only after the first ice-cooled freight cars were introduced. Their design was basic. Blocks of ice were packed into side compartments, and more ice was added along the way. In 1898, there were only around 50 of these cars in operation. Ten years later, there were more than two thousand.

In September 1913, railway workers bought 10 refrigerated cars from different manufacturers and sent a test train to the Caucasus. At the time, it was the longest β€œcold cargo” route ever attempted, lasting ten days. Fish and dairy products arrived in perfect condition. On the return journey, the same wagons delivered fresh fruit.

In Japan, an abandoned railway line between Namaze and Takeda has been transformed into a unique pedestrian route.

The trail follows the former railway bed through the Mukogawa Gorge. Along the way are six abandoned tunnels, suspension bridges, old railway signs, and original sleepers still underfoot. The experience feels like walking through a paused chapter of history. Nature is slowly reclaiming the infrastructure, with moss covering stonework and grass growing between the tracks.

The route is about five kilometers long and doesn’t require any special equipment. The only essential item is a flashlight, since some tunnels are long enough to be completely dark inside.
