If Dr. Seuss were alive to write a jazz-themed book, he could name it "Whole Note, Half Note, Blue Note, Ghost Note" with this band providing the soundtrack to the cartoon version, bassist Dwayne “MonoNeon” Thomas, in his hyper-colored getup and ski goggles, figuring as The Cat in the Hat.

Ghost-Note is co-led by Robert “Sput” Searight and Nate Werth, drum foundation of the multi-valent, multi-Grammy Award-winning musical collective Snarky Puppy. And like that band, Ghost-Note has absorbed so many influences as to become a new sound unto itself. Alongside them and Thomas are saxophonists Michael Jelani Brooks and Jonathan Mones, guitarist Peter Knudsen and keyboardist Vaughn Henry.

They certainly bring the funk and give the drummer(s) some at this appearance at the 2019 A to Jazz Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria, playing 90 minutes of music from their then-second album Swagism, whose title encapsulates what they exude on stage. Tight and loose, conceptual and bombastic, reverent and boundary-busting, Ghost-Note won't be pinned down.

Unless you are allergic to the chill of Parliament, cresting horns of The JBs, swirling keys of The Headhunters or Afrobeat of Fela Kuti or simply can't stand watching folks having a groovy time on a summer evening, Ghost-Note will jump out of your screen until you start making plans to see them in person.
