@qwest.tv It had been 66 years since Quincy Jones first came to Paris, and he’s brought with him a whole host of international talent. With Jules Buckley at the helm, a full orchestra runs through songs the entire audience knows by heart. Have they lost any of their freshness in the decades since their release? Any of the bounce, the bite, the euphoria? The answer is written on the musicians’ faces, who seem to relish every note.

But this concert was about more than just reprisal and homage. Instead, the lineup serves to accentuate some of the motifs that lie at the heart of the tracks. Firstly, the music is rooted in groove, of course, and rhythm section winds up the tension until everyone’s got their funk on. Who better to take things into overdrive than Marcus Miller and Richard Bona, world-renowned bassists, who combine for a ridiculous original duet over "Billie Jean."

Then, for songs like "Rock With You" and "Man in the Mirror," where the funk is blended into a bluer, more soulful tone, the depth and subtlety of a live orchestra establishes a mood like no other. Of special note is the moment where Ibrahim Maalouf, the French-Lebanese trumpeter, interprets "Human Nature" through a long, ethereal introduction. For a while he shadows the notes, hinting at them, before the much-loved melody appears in full bloom.

Lastly, for "Thriller," another element comes in – an essential element – dance. After twenty-something Salif Lasource shared a video of him performing the iconic moves, celebrities like Madonna and Lebron James sent the clip viral. His journey went from the streets of Paris to the biggest stage, one that he now shares with the man who was there at the beginning of it all, Quincy Jones.
