Today another step of my professional experience begins with the teaching of the course on Functional Safety IEC 61511, to obtain the UL-CFSP (Certified Functional Safety Professional by UL) certification.

December 20, 2020, an explosion in a pharmaceutical industry resulted in one death and numerous injuries, in addition a cloud continued to release in the sky for days.
The economic damages are engineered and the causes are being investigated.

There is still a lot to do.
Today we asked a device manufacturer for IEC 61508 certification and they sent me certification for Explosive Atmospheres (IEC 60079). Again, we asked an engineering company for the RRF value from the LOPA of a SIF, and they replied IP54 ... These things happen to me on a daily basis!

we think the matter of Functional Safety is being underestimated a lot, there is little preparation by both manufacturers and engineers as something that does not concern them, almost uncomfortable and annoying. We have often had this feeling.

Our commitment as a Functional Safety expert and teacher is first of all to make people understand the importance of this subject.
Then, there will always be the person who will tell you "well it's easy, I put two SIL3 transmitters so SIL3 + SIL3 = SIL6, and that's it!"

During the SIL allocation developed with LOPA or other methodology, it is important to describe the safety instrumented function including all the sensors and final elements applying the foreseen architecture.
Unfortunately, it often happens that this is not done, putting designers in difficulty.
Specifically, we are looking between reports, P&ID, process description, Instrument list to get the details of the functions and architectures, which will however be the subject of a further meeting with the LOPA participants to discuss and freeze them.

Only in this way will we be able to start drafting the Safety Requirement Specification.
