The Alexander platform was not engaged in oil production, but served as a dormitory for workers who extracted oil on a neighboring platform.
On the evening of March 27, 213 people rested there after a shift. A storm was raging overboard: the wind at a speed of 74 km/ h was raising waves 12 meters high. 
One of the six pillars broke, and after 15 minutes the whole structure collapsed on its side.
123 people died then.
