In India, for more than a thousand years, there has been a sati ritual – the burning of a widow together with her deceased spouse on a funeral pyre. The brahmins praised sati as the duty of an honest woman and qualified it not as suicide, but as an act of sacred reverence, which, according to them, should cleanse the couple from accumulated sin, guarantee their salvation and ensure reunification. 🤯

One day, the British commander-in-chief, Sir Charles James Napier, was approached by Hindu priests with a complaint that the British authorities were preventing the conduct of a sacred ritual that has been performed for thousands of years and which is a national tradition.

Nepier replied to this:
"You say that burning widows is your tradition. Fine. We also have a tradition: when men burn a woman alive, we take a rope, make a noose and throw it around their necks. Erect your funeral pyres — and nearby our carpenters will erect gallows for you. You can follow your traditions — and we will follow ours."
