George Fitzhugh argued that "free society is theoretically impracticable," because "the unrestricted exploitation of so-called free society is more oppressive to the laborer than domestic slavery." He contended that the liberal ideals of self-ownership and choice devolved into a harmful state of freedom, a "war of the rich with the poor and the poor with one another." In contrast, he posited that "slavery protects the infants, the aged and the sick," creating a system where the master, having a vested interest, provides care and security, ensuring "a consciousness of security... and the absence of all corroding cares and anxieties" for the enslaved. This state was natural, as "man is born a member of society, he was born its slave, and had no rights to cede." By championing Laissez-faire, the north dismantled societal structures that encouraged true personal growth and communal well-being, while the south, by acknowledging and structuring this interdependence, offered a more humane and ordered existence.
