The planet could be cooled using using a Boeing 777.
A new climate simulation led by researchers at University College London has revealed that existing commercial aircraft — like the Boeing 777F — could be used to cool the Earth by releasing tiny reflective particles into the stratosphere. No futuristic planes required.
The technique is known as stratospheric aerosol injection. It mimics the natural cooling effect of volcanic eruptions by dispersing sulfur dioxide into the upper atmosphere, where it forms reflective particles that bounce sunlight back into space. Traditionally, this was thought to require custom-designed aircraft capable of flying over 65,000 feet (20 km).
But the new study, published in Earth’s Future, modeled a lower-altitude alternative: injecting particles at 43,000 feet (13 km) near the poles, where the stratosphere is naturally closer to the ground. Planes already capable of reaching these altitudes — like freight jets — could potentially be retrofitted to do the job.
This “polar strategy” is less efficient: it would require three times more aerosol to achieve the same cooling effect, and could raise the risk of acid rain and other side effects. But it could also be deployed much sooner — bypassing the cost and delay of developing high-altitude aircraft, which could take a decade.
Simulations suggest that injecting 12 million tons of sulfur dioxide per year could cool the planet by around 1°F (0.6°C) — roughly the same impact observed after the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption.
It’s not a magic bullet.
The authors stress that this is not a substitute for reducing emissions, and that abrupt deployment or termination could be dangerous.
But it opens a door — showing that some forms of geoengineering might be closer, cheaper, and riskier than we imagined.
Is this a last resort, a backup plan, or a mistake we’ll regret?

Manchmal frage ich mich, was in manchen Köpfen vor sich geht. Die hamas will sich nicht entwaffnen. Warum denn auch bitte? Dass man den Israelis oder besser der rechts-extremen Regierung dort nicht vertrauen kann, sieht man doch jetzt: der Außenminister sagt, sie werden niemals aus Gaza raus gehen. Die Regierung billigt weitere illegale Siedlungen (wth?) im Westjordanland und vom Völkermord ganz abgesehen. Wenn die Hamas weg ist, haben die Palästinenser gar nichts mehr. Wenn die Hamas weg ist, ist Polen offen. SO kann man das nämlich auch sehen. Und TERROR? Machen die Israelis ja wohl auch. Bloß, dass er staatlich ist und „Selbstverteidigung“ heißt.
