The official military pocket encyclopedia. 2nd edition 1961, first published 1958.
In the UFO section, on page 392 it says: " UFO an unidentified flying object. UFO does not always denote alien, it is simply a flying object that cannot be categorized. Predominantly used for flying saucers."
Then look at page 127 and find, "flying saucer, the working term for a round rocket designed by German developers that became flightworthy in 1944. The spherical central part accommodates the crew, around the central part at the center is a flat ring to aid lift with many directionally adjustable nozzles on the outer edge. The rocket has a diameter of 44 meters and can perform non-standard flight movements in the lateral and vertical axes.
By 1944 it reportedly reached speeds of 2,000 km per hour and altitudes of 12,000 meters in a few minutes. Similar French designs became known after the war."
