⚗ Chemical facts for discussion: The measured half life degradation of phosgene into carbon dioxide and hydrochloric acid in water vapor/aqueous solution (water) is 0.026 seconds (while mostly insoluble, OSHA allows workplace air exposure up to 0.1 ppmv per SDS sheets)

When fires combust volatiles, they produce carbon dioxide and water vapor. The atmosphere is also 12%- 18% water vapor depending on humidity. There was a lot of water vapor to help degrade phosgene in the atmosphere near the release site.

When vinyl chloride burns the mass ratio of hydrochloric acid to phosgene formed is over 575 : 1, with the next lower byproduct being carbon monoxide.

The published papers on vinyl chloride combustion indicates fish and animals likely died from acidified rain/air/water from hydrochloric acid formed by combustion of vinyl chloride, not phosgene or dioxin...

Vinyl chloride also burns at temperatures greater than 900 degrees which are sufficient to degrade any dioxide impurities in the solution by incineration (optimum temp is 1000 deg)

Not to justify anyone's actions or seriousness of East Palenstine, but in the light of known basic chemistry, it is good to remember the knowledge of the past to help us understand better what we are dealing with...
