Pennsylvania lawmakers say a legal loophole allows people, even those convicted of crimes against children, to gain legal parentage through prebirth parentage orders, skipping the background checks required in adoption.

Today is a good day to learn about one of the worst Supreme Court decisions in recent history:

Tennessee v. Garner (1985)

Most of American history used the "fleeing felon" English common law standard: if you engage in fresh pursuit of a thief without unreasonable delay, then you can use lethal force.

In 1985, the Supreme Court invented a new standard. It said that under the Fourth Amendment, shooting a fleeing felon was an "unreasonable seizure".

This was not what the Founders meant. This was not considered "unreasonable" at any moment before that moment in time. This was not an originalist interpretation. This was six men inventing a new standard, from whole cloth.

So now it's illegal to shoot a felon who is running away from you everywhere in America. Even if your state says it's legal, too bad.

Even worse, it's basically impossible to change. It would take a constitutional amendment or the Supreme Court overruling its own recent precedent to change it, two incredibly unlikely events.

So now good men like Orest Schur go to jail, while criminals can steal without fear.

‼️🇺🇸💵 - Market signals and economic data show increasing indications of a collapse in the US dollar's status as the global reserve currency

▪️It has been clear that since Liberation Day investors have been pulling out of American bonds. US interest rates are significantly elevated relative to competitors like Germany. Borrowers - including the US government - are already feeling the pinch from the decline in US dollar hegemony. Even US corporates are shunning US dollar debt in favour of cheaper alternatives like euro debt.

▪️The US still runs a massive trade deficit, however. Typically this is funded by selling debt abroad. So, how are they still propping this up? Answer this question and you start to get a sense of why the US dollar is so fragile right now.

▪️This chart shows that foreigners have massively wound down on debt purchases since Liberation Day. Plugging the gap that opened up are US stocks. The trade deficit and hence US living standards are being propped up by foreign inflows into the stock market.

▪️When we dig into the data we see that this is not a broad market inflow. Rather, it appears that foreign investors are heavily invested in just a few big tech stocks - the so-called Magnificent 7.

▪️If the stock market crashes then financial inflows into the US will collapse. This will drive the US dollar downward to force the trade deficit closed. Despite having fallen in recent months, the US dollar still has far to fall.
