👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻When I worked on the border it went like this. 1) An Illegal breaks an ankle jumping over the border wall.

2). Border patrol brings the person to our ER a few clicks from Mexican Border. Then they release the border jumper from custody so the government isn’t responsible for the bill.

3) I spend hours in the OR in the middle of the night treating horrific open ankle fractures and more with dirty sand ground into the wound and bone. I care for the patient for about a week. All for free. The hospital has a grant ftom the government to get some reimbursement. I have to do my day job as a spine surgeon as usual. There is no comp time for this— because on the border 4 of us were doing what 10 Orthopaedists were doing up north in the posh part of the state.

4. The border jumper gets released and either is rearrested by border patrol, or he slips out unnoticed because the hospital is forbidden to call the authorities. If the person was a resident of USA and the staff suspected he was wanted by the police, they could call the police. But if the person is illegal, there is a gag order on 15 hospitals on the border— they cannot call authorities.

5. Finally, if the patient/ illegal has had time and help they have obtained funds , and to avoid the check points on Interstate 8 along the border, they get a bus ticket on a tour bus going to Laughlin or Vegas then get from there to relatives in LA etc.

Everyone knew the system. The result was we could not recruit surgeons to take trauma call, in spite of the hospital paying a nominal fee now to take the 24 hour call. I finally left after 15 years, my younger colleague died after being on call for almost a week straight, and the one good thing about Biden’s open border policy? They didn’t have to jump over a fence at just the height to cause traumatic injury. ( Trump fences are higher).👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻
