🔐 Code 77777: When Durov Himself Became a Victim of Telegram

On July 29, 2025, a critical bug appeared inside Telegram, where an ordinary user could get the technical support number (+999) in a completely stupid way. All you had to do was enter the confirmation code 77777. And that's it, you have a unique account. This code was the same for all accounts with test numbers — including Pavel Durov’s own account.

👾 That night, attackers submitted an account recovery request. After 7 days, the awaited “Reset Account” button appeared on the recovery page. Following receiving no response from Telegram—the attackers pressed the button, and Pavel Valeryevich’s account was deleted.

🧩 Among the usernames inside that account, one had not yet been minted as an NFT ( @unbrokensociety ) and was instantly freed for others to claim. The first person to take it was a newly registered user—whose account was deleted immediately.

⏳ Then, the username was claimed by someone with an “older” account, but they lasted only 5 minutes before their account was also deleted. Mysteriously, the username was almost immediately returned to Durov’s possession.

⚠️ What followed was even more concerning:
Channels that initially reported the true reasons behind these account deletions were blocked. Innocent users—who hadn’t violated any Terms of Service—were deleted merely for attempting to reclaim Pavel’s “lost” username.

What can we conclude?

Technical bugs happen.
But deleting users without cause? That’s a choice.

Telegram’s team could have resolved this situation gracefully. Instead, Durov and his colleagues opted for radical measures that ironically violated their own platform’s rules. ( Fragment Community opinion )
