Radios for neighborhood comms. I have about 20 neighbors... we setup the radios so that there is one group channel and each family has their own frequency / CTCSS code. Once upon a time we had only a group channel and the kids were running around on ATVs and we got tired of listening to them so we shut off the radio and missed a call. Better to move to a quiet channel.. The baofeng radios have alpha numeric displays and we named each channel by family last name.... so now you just turn dial to your family channel and if someone wants you they can go there too and call you. Group channel still used by all.

Remember, if you turn off tone squelch, you can hear everyone. Also, tone squelch can prevent you from hearing a busy channel.

I usually leave tone squelch off, especially on repeater setups.

Want an encrypted way to communicate that is unbreakable? Pick a book like war and peace or the Bible. Make sure everyone in your group has the same printed version. Now thumb thru the book for a word you need. When you find the word, send the page number and word number. Or page num, paragraph num, and word number. Do not get lazy and use the same code for the same word twice. If you always use page 2 word 15 for the word “the” I might figure out your code over time. One of the ways the enigma code was broken was that every code began with heil hitler. And they started the day with weather reports using the daily code. Don’t get lazy.

Even better, use a different book for different people you send messages to. I might use war and peace for friend A and the Bible for friend B.

Poor man’s spread spectrum.... program a radio with a series of frequencies in some random order in memory. The order doesn’t matter. Set your radio to scan that list of frequencies. I’ll key up and talk on any random one. Within a second your radio will arrive on the busy channel and stop to listen. When I’m done talking I’ll make my radio scan again. Your radio will go back to scanning. You will simply key up the radio while it’s scanning and the channel selection will be random.
Your mileage may vary... some radios are easier to make scan than others.

Can you elaborate here? How do you make sure each radio is scanning and picking up the correct band?

Different radios start scanning differently. I can’t speak to the specifics of any given radio. My ham radios require only a long press on the up button on the mic to start scanning. Also it may be advantageous to make some frequencies on 2m and others on 440mhz.
