This post from the page Cursed Hitboxes instantly reminded me of the pre-Newton era of mathematics.
This is exactly how mathematicians like Archimedes calculated area before Calculus existed. To find the area of a curvy or complex shape, they would "exhaust" the space by filling it with simple rectangles.
βBy adding up the area of many small "hitboxes," they could get a very close approximation of the total area. Newton eventually took this idea and turned it into the Integral, allowing us to calculate the exact area without needing the boxes at all.
βBasically, game developers are still using 2,000-year-old math to make sure your punches land.
(In video games, a "hitbox" is an invisible rectangle used to detect collisions. Instead of the computer calculating every tiny detail of a character's body (which is slow), it uses these simple boxes. If a "hurtbox" enters a "hitbox," you take damage, even if the art doesn't perfectly match the box.)
