Spain would much rather Puigdemont return to face trial on charges of sedition after he led a failed Catalan independence referendum in 2017.

INTRODUCTION
The sentencing of nine Catalan leaders to between 9 and 13 years' imprisonment for sedition on 14 October sparked protests across Catalonia.
Clashes between protesters and police resulted in more than 200 arrests and 600 injuries.
This disturbing report by the Registry and Communication System for Institutional Violence (SIRECOVI) is the product of interviews with 22 of the prisoners.
The report describes the breaches of the detainees' basic rights from their arrests until their first days of imprisonment: the physical and psychological violence they suffered during detention, their transfers to police stations and courthouses, and their medical examinations while in custody.(read more👇)
