The variegated-pointed butterfly (Appias olferna), also known as the "Yaeyama butterfly" in Taiwan, is mainly distributed in tropical regions such as the Philippines, the Indochina Peninsula, and the Malay Peninsula.

Records of this butterfly first appeared in Taiwan in 1933, where it was initially considered an occasionally occurring species. It was not discovered again until 2002 when it was collected again in Xiaogang District, Kaohsiung City. Since then, the population has rapidly expanded, and it is now easily found in central and southern Taiwan.

The wings of the Edge-Pointed White butterfly are a light, pure white, with dark brown markings inlaid along the edges of the forewings and hindwings. However, the pattern is not pure black, but rather resembles the spreading ink wash of a traditional Chinese painting, with varying shades of ink and brushstrokes of lightness, heaviness, speed, and slowness, giving it the tranquil, elegant, and expressive charm of traditional landscape paintings.
