Dubliners were protesting outside 21Aungier St tonight after learning that 60 asylum seekers are to accommodated in the building.

Now called The Staircase, the historic building is one of Dublin's oldest townhouses and dates back to 1660 when the street was first developed.

It originally belonged to Richard Parsons (born in Twickenham, Middlesex),1st Earl of Rosse, a Freemason and Grandmaster of the Grand Lodge of Ireland who was a founder-member of the Hell-Fire Club.

It was rescued from near demolition and restored to a high standard by Dublin Civic Trust in the 1990s, preserving its medieval features such as timber beams, chimneys, and walls and has one of the best preserved seventeenth-century staircases in the city.

It was previously reported that the building was used by the Peter McVerry Trust to house homeless people but that no longer seems to be the plan.
