On September 2nd the European Commission released a document laden with recommendations on how to fight COVID-19 this winter, a rather odd concern given the low number of infections and the range of more immediate crises demanding attention.

The main focus of this 15-page document, which only briefly mentions vaccines or other "soft" measures, is preventing people from gathering. A return to working from home, restrictions on travel between countries and the possibility of limiting the size of "mass gatherings" are all explored at considerable length and visited upon more than once.

The document feels much more like one designed to prepare governments to deal with major unrest related to the cost of living crisis than one about community health concerns.

European elites are hiding behind the ghost of the pandemic in an attempt to suppress public displeasure with the elite's inability to solve any of the crises facing Europe.
