1954年美国空军全球物理政治图的格陵兰非常清楚，不像是万年冰层覆盖的资讯，岛上地形基本平坦，是一个高于海平面约2000米的平坦高地，奇怪的地形，再加上平均1000米奇怪的完整冰盖。
同纬度的冰岛是没有被冰长年覆盖，但叫冰岛；同纬度的格陵兰被冰长年覆盖，但叫绿岛。
